Metcalf interview on Flowrestling

Personally, I like his mentality in that interview. It was more of a "I beat myself" and not a "he's better than me" attitude.

Metcalf's demeaning comments about Palmer, a day before, reveal a lot about him. You can be intense with class. Ask Cael...

Here's the deal; Brent Metcalf is dominant, and all wrestling fans can see his brilliance. If you are an Iowa fan, you absolutely love the guy. If you are not an Iowa fan, first of all, you hate all things Iowa wrestling out of spite, and second, re-read the first thing.

The fact is, every single team in the nation and their fanbase would take Brent Metcalf as their 149 pounder. If you say you wouldn't, we'll have to disagree.

Then why did he lose?

OK, NC State. Will give you that :)

Amazing turnaround in a year where Metcalf beat him 19-3 at the all star meet, to that last night. But I think people get what I am saying. If you don't, then we'll just disagree. And I went in and edited my first post, as that was probably too strong of a statement by me.

Brent Metcalf is a great wrestler and I enjoy watching him, but there is definitely a screw loose in that guys head. His mind is just constantly wandering. Every interview he has I get scared for the reporters life. He seems like he could just snap at any second. He's the type of guy that I would want to be as far as possible from if he was drinking.

He is just a poster boy for Iowa Wrestling. Is he great...undoubtedly. The greatest? Not according to NC State or *cough* Cael Sanderson *cough*. Would I take him? sure. Would he act this way at ISU?..probably not. He is a product of their school and coach. When is the last time a University of Iowa team lost in ANYTHING and ever said, that team/individual was better and out performed me. It is ALWAYS, "I beat myself, the refs beat me, our team didn't show up, the other person/team wanted it more." Combine that with the fact that Brands, while a great wrestler and obviously a good and motivating coach, is a complete classless a-hole. Is it a surprise that his wrestlers exude a winning is everything classlessness? There is going to be a lot more hate and resentment building up by other teams against Iowa because of the way they act, talk, and carry themselves under Brands. As long as Iowa is the best and bringing home the hardware then they can say, "who cares." But, as parity sets in there will be a lot of people returning the favor when they do beat Iowa and their wrestlers so they should get used to it. I am in no way in favor of the backflip but can see why it would be nice to rub the iowa arrogance right back in their face. You stay classy, hawks.

Yeah, I'm 100% certain ISU fans would HATE it if their wrestlers showed the same type of confidence that Iowa wrestlers do.

I'm sorry, but the mentality that "the other team was just better" is for losers. If you plan on being a winner, you don't come out and say, "yeah, he was just better." That's stupid.

If it makes you feel better about your sports teams by saying, "Yeah, we're classy because our coaches and players say things like 'the other team was better'", then so be it. I, for one, would not have been in the least bit pleased if Metcalf would have come out and said, "yeah, even though I beat him by technical fall earlier this year, he is much better than me now."

Gee Jon you talking out of your rear and then having to go back and "edit your overstatement" Don't hear of you doing that to get attention on your craptastic show TOO often.

Your arguement doesn't refute any class statements so I will take it you conceed that point.

Incase you are too thick to get it, lets dumb it down for you. Class has little to do with tallent, particularly when you talk about the hawkeye program over the last 5-10 years.

I imagine Metcalf had a long time to think after getting pinned by Caldwell the year before...
Terming this a huge "upset" is a little bit of a stretch. He broke Metcalf mentally.

well, he could state the obvious, "On this day he was the better wrestler." That doesn't concede anything about past or future performances but credits the guy who just owned him. That would be classy. Alternatively, just shut your mouth, that would also be classy. Apparently at Iowa there is something demeaning to self worth to call a spade a spade.

Both of these are classy ways to go. I respect people that can say that, as opposed to giving interviews that sound like pro wrestling characters (which is fun in its own way, but not after an actual wrestling tournament).

Obviously, the NC State guy is better, for at least two days. He should learn to deal with that and make adjustments as necessary.

Saying the other person was better when they just kicked your tail isn't a "losers mentality" it is just proving you aren't an idiot, which is why no Hawkeye wrestlers do it.
