Anyone know exactly how they work? I'm sure it is case by case but there are defining rules around this. I was actually thinking about Burton. What a waste of your best Olineman. He redshirted in 2012. I do know that in order to qualify for a MR it has to be incurred during first half of year...you can't play 2nd half of year. He missed all of UNI, Iowa, played vs Toledo?, TT and ku. Don't know if he played vs TCU? When did he get hurt last was it TCU game or Baylor? Or was it Texas? It's just too bad as he will have missed half the year or more.

No expert, but I don't think medical redshirt exists anymore.

You can redshirt, and you cannot play.

I think what you are thinking of is a petition for a medical hardship to get another year, even after you used your redshirt. Not sure of the criteria, but I think it is hard to get one. You have to wait until your eligibility is all used up.

I think Bundrage might have a reasonable shot since he went down in Game 1 of that year. Doubt Burton does.

I don't know the rules either, but a person I know with knowledge of the situation said Bundrage is not eligible. I have no doubt that Burton would not be eligible.

Sounds correct. He redshirted already as a freshman and I assume that was a choice redshirt or as the NCAA rule call it "Circumstances Within Control". It would require a 5 year eligibility waiver which cannot happen unless there was something out of his control his freshman year, say he was injured or sick which I don't believe he was.

Basically he has had his five years and used one as an "elective" (my word) freshman redshirt.

A player receives a medical hardship if they have played in 30% or less of the games in any sport. Rounded up that is 4 games for football. I think they are routinely granted to any player who has not already taken a redshirt.
A player who has already redshirted and then requests a medical hardship in a subsequent year would then require 6 years to get 4 years to play. The granting of a 6th year is an individual case by case situation. I don't think the player can appeal for this until they have completed their 5th year.

"Regular" (voluntary) redshirt - you can't play at all in a season. Athletes are given 5 years to play 4.

"Medical" redshirt - common term for a medial hardship waiver. CyCy sounds correct, but I can't vouch for the details. If you did NOT take a regular redshirt season, which means you are STILL within the normal 5 years to play 4; and you were out most of a season (the percentage of the season is the detail I'm not sure about), then you qualify for a medical hardship waiver and are allowed to play your 5th year, even though you've played all or part of 4 seasons already.

6th year of eligibility - I'm much less certain about this, but I believe it's basically getting 2 medical hardship waivers -- if you miss 2 seasons to injury you might be given a 6th year to play your 4th full season.

Bundrage doesn't qualify for a medical hardship waiver (or a 6th year of eligibility for that matter) due to taking a regular voluntary redshirt season. Of course anyone can apply, but the argument will pretty much be "pretty please with sugar on top because it was only the 4th play of the season (if I remember)".
