Made Rite Sandwiches

The church booths at the Delaware County fair decades ago had sandwiches that were like the Maid Rites and not sloppy joe's. Other than those everything else I ever had was not Maid Rite like.

Maid-Rites are loose hamburger on a bun. They can be topped with condiments, but aren't cooked in a sauce.

Sloppy Joe's/Tavern's are loose hamburger cooked in a sauce.

That's how I understand it.

If you ever thought "I want to eat a hamburger but I want the meat to all fall out of the bun and onto my lap" then you're wanting a Maid Rite.

Maid-rites are cooked in a "sauce" of water, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, etc., but it's just not a tomato-based sauce like Sloppy Joes.

Also, I am concerned about the OPs claim to be a native Iowan while then going on to misspell Maid Rite and confuse it with a sloppy joe.

Listen here MR! I was in high school with The Mayor. I was a Sr and he was a Sophomore. I played offensive line for Ames High and protected him from Des Moines School Goons! Well, actually I didn't start:smile:

and I taught him all I know playing 21 after school. He wouldn't win all the time, but most of the time:twitcy:

Here's my family's Maid-Rite recipe:

-take one hamburger, the blander the better
-scrape off everything that gives it flavor (tomatoes, onions, etc.)
-remove the patty, place it into a bowl, break the patty into as many tiny pieces as possible, and set aside
-dip the bun into a cup of water to make it soggy
-return the crumbled hamburger patty to the bun
-serve with a side of loneliness or crippling shame

No, Maid Rites are cooked in a sauce of their own grease. Nothing else.

A sauce of their own grease and the tears of people who were expecting to eat something with flavor and not expecting to wear more of the sandwich than they actually ate.

This is starting to come back. Ok, Sloppy Joes had the sauce and Maid Rites were just ground beef crumbled with no flavor. Regardless, both of those being served at school lunch = depressed students. Pizza day was the best, but that didn't happen very often

Yep, looked forward to pizza day. Unfortunately, the pizza consisted of a cardboard-like crust covered with ketchup and white American cheese. What was I thinking...
