The things is, and it was stated in this thread or another, where you go to school does matter. some but its not the be all end all. Listening to the starters on the Super Bowl teams was like hearing a who's who of small colleges. Just because you don't go to a Notre Dame or USC etc... doesn't mean you wont get drafted and just because you do doesn't mean you will. Obviously going to the major programs is a leg up but at some point you have to perform up to the standards.

Franklin later had a couple of pro tryouts and did not meet the master requirements.

Really? Because he is on an nfl roster

Yeah, I mean, just look at all the crappy players that get invited to the NFL combine. It obviously has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with program reputation...

really? Did you miss the point? Yep

Never said guys aren't good. All I'm saying is that if you have two players with the exact same skills, where the kid goes to school matters. Right now Iowa state has been poor with talent lately and thus they won't get the fringe players in the combine where other schools would. I'm not talking first 4 round guys. I'm talking late draft to free agent guys. Allen reisner is a perfect example. There are 25 tight ends as talented as him every draft but he came from a school that produces good tight ends and he got an invite to the combine. A guy with similar skills doesn't get the invite from Indiana. It's a compliment towards the hawks but your to dumb to get that.

I hope Rhoads produces good talent and we get to a level someday where our fringe players get an invite

Is recruiting better players an important aspect to getting more players to the combine? Sure. But more important is winning more than 6 or 7 games a year. Of course recruiting better players will assist with that, but NFL teams really don't give a crap about how many stars a player had on their profile coming out of high school, they care about how good the player is, and the best players usually come from winning programs. Thus why Iowa gets more players called to the combine than ISU, even if some of their players aren't any better than ISU players that get snubbed.

Participants are determined annually by a Selection Committee. The Directors of both National and BLESTO scouting services, which combined represent twenty-five NFL teams, are joined by members of various NFL player personnel departments to form the committee. The participating NFL executives can rotate on a yearly basis, and remain anonymous. ALL eligible players are reviewed and voted on by the committee members. Each athlete receiving the necessary number of votes, by position, is then extended an invitation. While it is not a perfect science, the goal of the committee is to invite every player that will be drafted in the ensuing NFL Draft.

Not sure how PR from CPR is going to make a difference when the players graduating don't have the talent level to get drafted. Reality we had two guys who deserve to be drafted and a couple long shot free agent signings that may have a shot at a practice squad and are very unlikely to make an NFL non practice squad roster.

ISU has more talent in the Freshman - Junior classes and I am sure we will see a corresponding increase in combine invites. For most schools outside the top 10, 2-4 invites is pretty normal.

When you look at the list of invites you also notice the team that does the invites does a pretty good job of identifying kids likely to be drafted regardless of school. This years invites include, Troy, PRESBYTERIAN, LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE, NEVADA, SMU, TENNESSEE TECH, TENNESSEE-CHATT, SOUTH DAKOTA, NORTH DAKOTA, RICHMOND... and that's just players with last names ending in A, B or C.

THese guys job is to find players and they look everywhere. Want more combine invites...get more NFL talent into ISU.

Just my opinion, but if iowa REALLY had three NFL players on their OL, not to mention an NFL WR, that offense way underperformed. ISU's offense wasn't much if any worse than them with no consistent QB play and a worse WR corps. Personally, in what games I watched iowa play, I didn't see much from Zusevics and Gettis to say that they were dominant players...more along the lines of what Hicks showed. The other side is if there really ARE that good, how much is that OL going to struggle next year? We already know that their DL is going to be green. If the OL has holes, iowa is in for a long season.

This. Benton and Hicks had an outside shot at getting an invite to the combine. Doesn't mean they can't still get drafted or end up on an NFL roster.

Any team that signs Hicks can expect at least one false start or holding penalty a game. Guy was a penalty machine...even more than KO. I think that Reynolds is the one who has a chance to get drafted late. Benton, Hicks and Rump will get a shot as free agents.

I really think one of CPR's biggest hurdles to overcome is to get his senior players more attention coming out of school and a better shot to get drafted. Let's be honest, if Hicks or Benton played for a bigger name school they would have gotten an invite to the Combine.

It's a tough thing to overcome for sure but will do wonders for recruiting.

I actually think Mike Mayock gave KO and LJ rave reviews during the SR Bowl Practices. He was saying good things about him all the time.

Sorry I am so late to the party on this one.

Do you think KO's shaky SR Bowl week may have played a part in Hicks not getting invited? If it did play some part, I am not saying I agree with that logic, but lets face it who knows what some of these scouts/ teams are thinking when it comes to scouting and even front office decisions.

This example is a little off topic but shows how screwed up an organization can be. Back in 2003 the Chicago Bears (my team) had a regional scout named Phil Emery who endorsed Rex Grossman as a number 1 pick to then Bears GM Jerry Angelo. We all know Grossman was aweful, but the story gets better. In 2004 Emery moves to ATL and then later to KC. When the Bears fired Jerry Angelo as GM earlier this year guess who the Bears selected as his replacement. Phil Emery. I love the Bears but Virginia McCaskey, fill in the blank son of Virginia running the Board and Ted Phillips (team Pres) make that team my prison sometimes.

I told you all that to say scouting in the NFL is sometimes legit and sometimes pointlessly political. I definately don't always expect it to make sense.
