CW discussed this in a podcast, it's not the same for revenue generating sports so it won't happen. Just pay him a lot more than he is making now.

I doubt he is really worried about wether or not ISU is going to fire him at the end of the season.

Fred will be here until he wants to leave. I don't see him spending an entire career here, but at least until his kids go to college?

This was actually discussed on the "filling out the brackets" podcast. You can't really do that with a revenue sport. I mean, you can, but it's not wise. Let's say Fred decides to start mailing it in because he has a lifetime contract and the program goes south. You're now locked into a long term contract with a mediocre revenue sport that's now not making revenue. I have no problem with "paying the man his money" and making it large sums, but to make it a "forever" contract...nope. And yes, I realize Bill's wasn't technically a forever contract either, but to do a 'lifetime' contract with Fred would be on the order of 20 years, that's a long ways from Bill's 12 years.

Theres not a lot of situations id say this regarding coaches....but with Hoiberg it applies.

Sometimes you gotta just back up the money truck and say "How much you need?".

Lifetime contract....definitely.

Yeah, in MBB and football the coaches want immediate money, not some gimmicky life time contract that the coach can/will get out of if he chooses. The Paul Rhoads contract is sort of a joke but it's a little understandable given our financial limitations.

I think we should take our chances with Fred. I think it is a safe bet he wouldn't "mail it in"

What does a lifetime contract even mean? How many years would we have to pay him off if something happens and we have to fire him?

Just give him a healthy raise every year.

I think for Fred this would be safe (lifetime)....and COULD be written with clauses that could cover any earth shattering failures he may have (ouch, my fingers just engulfed in flames typing that!). :spinny:

I do think we need to continue to reward him with $$...and I also think it's fair to say he and Jamie have a good relationship and could talk salary and fairness appropriately (I also think we probably do get the 'friends' discount with Fred). I'm sure this will happen, but do you think if, say, a bigger name said "we'll give you $3 mil a year" would he take that to JP?

I also think we could write a contract that could "ease" him out to a Associate AD job too (that's honestly where I think Fred retires).

I know, ultimately, this is a business and success brings $$ (so we should be able to pay him as long as we do well)...but I also know that JP did Fred a favor and took a chance on him...and you have to think, deep down, Fred gets that, too and maybe we benefit from JP putting his neck out there.

With Fennelly, he's guaranteed through what was I'm guessing his target retirement year. Not to sound too hyperbolic, but I'd be stunned if we found a better fit for us than Fred. The guy has it all. Everything you want in a coach, he has it. It's almost a fairytale. I'd do it in a heartbeat and leave some wiggle room for both parties.

He won't mail it in but I don't see the need for that from either party's perspective.

Pay the man what he's worth (quite a bit) on short-term contracts.

So, how about a 10 year contract as a middle ground?

The good part about having Fred as our coach is that even if we were to have a down year, that season would still be a success, because Fred Hoiberg.

Can Fred Hoiberg mail anything in, except for being dreamy? I think that is something he doesn't have to put effort into - he wakes up in the morning and pisses dreamy.
