This is pretty interesting. Danielsen was talking about the depth, talent, and physical make up of our current roster in relation to the job CMC is doing. He shared a personal story to put it in context in relation to where CMC started when he got here:

"..Jack (Whitver) and I were at practice, and Matt Campbell's just so honest. He's like, his honest assessment of where we're at as a program, and I remember his first year. We lost to UNI. We lost at Iowa. And he had a banquet...
...and I vividly remember he pulled me aside, and he's like, 'Lane, I had no idea how little depth and talent we had when I took this job.' He goes, 'I took this job because we played here, I know it's the Big 12, and I loved the environment. I had no idea how bare the cupboards were'..."

I wonder if the coaches ever joked after the fact how little talent and depth CPR had.

I remember how relatively optimistic we were that our new coach would be able able to build around having a solid balanced attack on offense at QB, RB, and WR with Lazard, Warren and Lanning coming back after Warren's impressive freshman 1,000 yard campaign and Lanning showing promise at QB with his physical running style and ability to throw a pretty good deep ball.

The Iowa game pretty much shattered that illusion immediately after not being able to do much offensively against UNI either. It was definitely a very auspicious start that Campbell had to deal with.

We were reasonably competitive in games down the stretch and it probably doesn't get enough credit considering he couldn't even count on what little we thought we had to offer from a competitive standpoint. It truly was a total rebuild and credit to CMC and his staff.

In hindsight, we can all be glad Campbell never took any shortcuts or comprimises to building the team the right way. Other than the ugly beatdown in Iowa City, the team was very competitive in 2016 which now speaks volumes for how good the staff is at getting the most out of the kids.

Coach Mac had similar revelations when he took over from Walden: lack of talent, lack of facilities, lack of resources, lack of belief in the program, etc.

I know he never took ISU to the heights that Campbell has already taken the program, but he faced a similar uphill battle. It just shows how important the head coach is to the success of a college football team.

Yeah, his early teams were competitive because they stayed healthy and had some studs at key positions.. The last few years when 1 or two key starters went down we were screwed. There was zero depth at any position and even half the starters were questionable at the end.

Tells us Rhoads was kept around 1-2 years too long. The writing was on the wall with him after 2012. Similar to the recent basketball situation.
Man, the Rhoads era feels a hell of a lot longer ago than it actually is.

Thanks for posting this! I am currently listening to it right now. He also mentioned that Marv Cook's son (who is a walk-on) was pushing Bouman and looked really good. He is also a lefty like Dekkers and Bouman.

Lane also mentioned that Breece is built like an NFL running back and the whole team is huge.

The cupboard has always been bare ever since Donnie Duncan. Then we lost scholarships under Criner.

Walden, McCarney, Rhoads had the same bare cupboard issue (I hesitate to include Chizik.

That makes what Campbell has done in a short amount of time remarkable

Makes it even more remarkable that we were potentially still a few bounces away from being .500 or close to it. In the second half of that season we lost some games closer than we had any right to be in with the talent discrepancies.
The game that made me realize we had something with Campbell was actually the Oklahoma game that year. We hung with them for much of the game and didn't look completely overmatched like we had against them previously.

That was a great pod to listen to last year when CW and Blum had him on. Man, I was ready to run through a wall after that one, no doubt about it!

Football is won on the offensive and defensive line. Always has been and always will be. If you need a refresher. Go watch the last Super Bowl or the 2020 Big 12 championship.

In year 2 you could tell CMC had figured out the defensive line. We were no longer giving up 150+ yards a game and every Saturday was competitive.

Fast forward to 2020 and the offensive line appeared to be coming together. We go 8-1 in conference and win a NY6 bowl. If we can sustain top half of the league offensive and defensive lines from year to year...Our floor becomes what Iowa's program is. Getting elite talent at the skill positions is where you take a program like Iowa and turn them into Notre Dame

UNI was really bummed when ISU came in late with the PWO. They really thought he was going to be the guy pretty quickly.

I'm pretty sure we blew 4th quarter leads in enough games that holding them would have gotten us to a bowl.

OK State and Baylor were both games with late leads, and I think we had a 4th quarter lead against UNI too.

2016
UNI - led 20-19 with 7:00 left. Next 3 poss: INT, FUM, INT. Lost 25-20.
BU - led 42-28 after Q3. Lost 45-42.
OSU - led 31-21 after Q3. Lost 38-31.

Flip all 3: 6-6 (4-5 Big 12), and a trip to the Armed Forces Bowl (#25 Navy), Cactus Bowl (10-2 Boise State), or Liberty Bowl (7-5 Georgia).

One thing that did not help Rhoads either was he did have some initial momentum when he took over but the conference re-alignment stuff probably set that back on the recruiting trail. CW even alluded to this on his show awhile back and I hope the current situation the Big 12 is in doesn't mess with the momentum Campbell has going on too because you know other schools are going to be using that when out recruiting how if you commit to a Big 12 school how can you be certain they will be in a Power 5 conference by the time you are done there? This is why I hope something gets settled with the uncertainty sooner rather than later. Whether that is the Big 12 announces expansion and gets back to 12 teams in a timely manner or Pollard is working the back channels to land us in another P5 conference ASAP because the longer the remaining 8 schools are left in limbo the harder this is going to be to maintain if it hurts us on the recruiting trail.
