I hear lots of folks talk about that game as if it was the only game LaFester ever went off in, but he averaged almost 22 points per game that season, only overshadowed by have Jeff Grayer on the team. That team had talent, as Big Vic was on the team and hardly played!
I remember watching that game from a hotel room that night as my roommate married my sister (I know, makes me a bad chaperone!) that weekend in Cedar Rapids. We watched the game in a hotel room with a tub full of snow and drinks. 20+ people in the room and all Clones save one Hawk fan, but she hated Jeff Moe so we let her stay.
My other big memory of Lafester was playing pick-up ball one summer with him and some of the guys from the team every afternoon on the big college size court in old state gym. I was easily the worst guy on the court most days, but fun to play. I didn't jump well, but had a pretty quick release on my jumper from the elbow where the FT line meets the lane on the right. I hit one over Lafester, then the next time down got the ball in the same place and he came flying at my shouting and he had the LONGEST arms. I barely got it over his finger tips and by the grace of God is swooshed. He looked at me as we ran up the court and all he said was, "Damn, white-boy!" Some may not believe that LaFester played defense in a pick-up game because they don't remember him playing any in Hilton, but he was a 40-40 guy that year with blocks and steals, and second I believe in rebounds.
