Kyle Kelm is.....

Why is this discussion even taking place? Does anyone here really think that we will not have anyone leave the program early in the next two years?

Probably will. But it doesn't change the fact that we are giving scholarships to people when we don't currently have them. We are going into houses and making promises, the same promises as the ones we made to other players a year or two ago. It just sits bad in my stomach.

I like Gmac. I hope he does well and coaches her for 20 years. But I will continue to say that signing 7 guys in a class should never ever happen, unless 3 of them are top 25 players who are one and dones. We had 0 top 150 players. That is 7 guys who are going to be around from 4-5 years.

Aside from the first page, thanks cyismydog, this is the worst most annoying thread ever....really, some guys on here second guessing gmac for bringing in top talent 2 years from now would be funny is it wasn't so misinformed.

Nobody get "pulled into the office to tell them ISU is yanking their scholership"...seriously, this is big time college basketball. As much as it is a sport to us fans to the players and coaches it's pretty much a business. There's nothing shady about recruiting better players and telling the kid that was overrecruited that they may not have much playing time.

Honestly, hanging on to players like CJ who might not end up fitting the system or getting much PT would be much worse and shady.

Every NCAA athlete on scholarship knows that their scholarship is a yearly thing, it ISN'T guaranteed for all 4/5 years. So I see no problem with pulling a current players scholarship to make room for someone who is better.

Someone above said he has no problem with pulling a guys scholarship when he isn't performing but does have a problem pulling a guys scholarship just to give it to a better incoming kid. I don't understand this, I mean if the player was performing he wouldn't have his scholarship pulled but obviously he isn't performing so they are gonna pull it to make room for a better player.

Exactly.

And as the poster above says, scholarships are on a yearly basis. There is no 4-year "contract" of any kind that the player signs.

Seeing the words "Gmac" and "shady" in the same sentence is laughable. He's probably as un-shady as it gets, almost to a fault.

Coaches don't go into players homes, meet with their families, coaches etc, and say come to Iowa State, we will guarantee you a scholarship for one year but if you can't cut it past that we will pull that offer off of the table and you are gone. Can you imagine a coach saying that and the recruiting class that would come in on that sales pitch? Don't give me that players know this line, that's not the case. When a player signs a LOI he is told he will have a scholarship for 4 years not, if we sign someone better.

No sir, you are misinformed. We are not talking about recruiting OVER players, we are talking about giving someobdy else that players scholarship. I don't know how you people can't see the difference. It is the coaches job to bring in better talent every year, but not at the expense of giving away scholarships that are currently accounted for.

If I am not good enough to play a lot of minutes, fine. Than it is MY decision to either stay and get 5 minutes a game, or transfer. I don't think it is right for the coach to pull my scholarship and give it to somebody else

Good luck with that one. When you start doing that, good luck with recruiting. You don't think other coaches will use that against ISU.

Scholarships are year to year, YES. But that does not mean that they should be year to year just based on performance. If a kid works his *** off for ISU and just isn't good enough, he should stay on scholarship. It is the COACHES FAULT for not evaluationg talent better

What makes you think that they would phrase it that way? It's an NCAA requirement to mention it, as well as clearly outlined in the LOI, that the scholarship is renewable yearly. The coaches may gloss it over, but it's a fact. And scholarships aren't pulled only because a player isn't good enough. Not hardly. Legally, a player has to know that going in.

And there are some borderline players who want a shot at a school, and know going in that if they don't improve X amount in two or three years, maturing into being a contributor, they'll be expected to transfer or leave the team.

Exactly. Imagine a coach coming in, convincing you to go to his school. You work your *** off for 2 years to get better. You are no better than the 8th best player on the team. Coach pulls you in and says we are giving your scholarship to this top 100 basketball player. I am sure most of you would understand

WHat if a coach comes to you and says look. You are not going to get to play next year. You can sit on the bench and watch or we can help find you a better situation where you can be the man. Maybe at a smaller school or a school with a new coach who needs game ready guys to come in and play.

So here is basically the choice. We love your work ethic. You can be one of our best hustle guys in practice or you can go to a school like Tulsa and be the main guy.

That would be fine. But what if the guy says NO? That he wants to stay. Than what? Do we make him leave anyway? Do we tell Kelm that we no longer have a scholarshp for him? Barnes?

You can't promise something to somebody that you don't have.

I think it would be one thing if people already knew a player was definately leaving after this year, it was announced, and we knew the scholarship is open. I think the problem people are having is that we are knowingly overrecruiting without knowing that someone is leaving. This can blow up and be a problem and coaches have been fired because of it.

As for coaches stating that the scholarship is renewable at time of recruitment... I was lucky enough to be able to go through the recruiting process by many schools in four sports. I never heard that the scholly was year by year untill I went to sign it again freshman year...

Exactly! Listen people! This is a guy who played college athletics. He knows the recruiting process.

I played college ball as well and I had 2 players on my team that should not have been playing. They were really bad, but my coach never gave their scholarship to somebody else. He recruited them, and it was him that went into their home and convinced them to go to their school.

No but a coach should be able to sell a kid to go to a different school. I am pretty sure Cory Johnson would have stayed around Ames had GMac not spelled out the best possibilities for Cory.

By the way How is Cory Playing this year. What school did he go to.

I'm not arguing about that. I am just saying, some guys wouldn't want to transfer. All their friends (who become family) are there and they can't think about starting over. What do we do than?

Tell him he is not cutting it. Look when you are offered a scholly you are expected to be a good player. If your not then you should not be playing. Your not recruited to be on the bench.

It's like everything else in life. If you are not good enough to do something then you have to move on. If you are offered a job and you don't perform they fire you.

That is life. So if a kid has to learn this early then so what. It's major college sports. I am not trying to be a jerk but you have to be capable to play. That is why they dont give every Joe Schmoe a schollarship.

Trust me all of the big coaches do it. Coach K does it. Royboy does it.

find the best student athlete and tell him that they are now on an academic schedule and they can continue their basketball career as a walk on.

An academic scholarship counts towards the total. It doesn't make any difference

So the coach gets away with recruiting a kid who isn't that good, but the kid doesn't? Listen the coach recruited him, made him a promise. It is just as much the coaches fault if the player is not as good as it is the coaches.

And NO Coach K does not do it. The NEVER use all their scholarships. They always leave one or two open. Like I said, is poor taste to offer somebody a scholarship that belongs to someone else.
