Why is this discussion even taking place? Does anyone here really think that we will not have anyone leave the program early in the next two years?

That is 7 guys who are going to be around from 4-5 years.
Honestly, hanging on to players like CJ who might not end up fitting the system or getting much PT would be much worse and shady.
Every NCAA athlete on scholarship knows that their scholarship is a yearly thing, it ISN'T guaranteed for all 4/5 years. So I see no problem with pulling a current players scholarship to make room for someone who is better.
Someone above said he has no problem with pulling a guys scholarship when he isn't performing but does have a problem pulling a guys scholarship just to give it to a better incoming kid. I don't understand this, I mean if the player was performing he wouldn't have his scholarship pulled but obviously he isn't performing so they are gonna pull it to make room for a better player.
Aside from the first page, thanks cyismydog, this is the worst most annoying thread ever....really, some guys on here second guessing gmac for bringing in top talent 2 years from now would be funny is it wasn't so misinformed.
Nobody get "pulled into the office to tell them ISU is yanking their scholership"...seriously, this is big time college basketball. As much as it is a sport to us fans to the players and coaches it's pretty much a business. There's nothing shady about recruiting better players and telling the kid that was overrecruited that they may not have much playing time.

Coaches don't go into players homes, meet with their families, coaches etc, and say come to Iowa State, we will guarantee you a scholarship for one year but if you can't cut it past that we will pull that offer off of the table and you are gone. quote]
What makes you think that they would phrase it that way? It's an NCAA requirement to mention it, as well as clearly outlined in the LOI, that the scholarship is renewable yearly. The coaches may gloss it over, but it's a fact. And scholarships aren't pulled only because a player isn't good enough. Not hardly. Legally, a player has to know that going in.
And there are some borderline players who want a shot at a school, and know going in that if they don't improve X amount in two or three years, maturing into being a contributor, they'll be expected to transfer or leave the team.
Exactly. Imagine a coach coming in, convincing you to go to his school. You work your *** off for 2 years to get better. You are no better than the 8th best player on the team. Coach pulls you in and says we are giving your scholarship to this top 100 basketball player. I am sure most of you would understand
WHat if a coach comes to you and says look. You are not going to get to play next year. You can sit on the bench and watch or we can help find you a better situation where you can be the man. Maybe at a smaller school or a school with a new coach who needs game ready guys to come in and play.
So here is basically the choice. We love your work ethic. You can be one of our best hustle guys in practice or you can go to a school like Tulsa and be the main guy.
I think it would be one thing if people already knew a player was definately leaving after this year, it was announced, and we knew the scholarship is open. I think the problem people are having is that we are knowingly overrecruiting without knowing that someone is leaving. This can blow up and be a problem and coaches have been fired because of it.
As for coaches stating that the scholarship is renewable at time of recruitment... I was lucky enough to be able to go through the recruiting process by many schools in four sports. I never heard that the scholly was year by year untill I went to sign it again freshman year...
That would be fine. But what if the guy says NO? That he wants to stay. Than what? Do we make him leave anyway? Do we tell Kelm that we no longer have a scholarshp for him? Barnes?
You can't promise something to somebody that you don't have.
No but a coach should be able to sell a kid to go to a different school. I am pretty sure Cory Johnson would have stayed around Ames had GMac not spelled out the best possibilities for Cory.
By the way How is Cory Playing this year. What school did he go to.
find the best student athlete and tell him that they are now on an academic schedule and they can continue their basketball career as a walk on.
Tell him he is not cutting it. Look when you are offered a scholly you are expected to be a good player. If your not then you should not be playing. Your not recruited to be on the bench.
It's like everything else in life. If you are not good enough to do something then you have to move on. If you are offered a job and you don't perform they fire you.
That is life. So if a kid has to learn this early then so what. It's major college sports. I am not trying to be a jerk but you have to be capable to play. That is why they dont give every Joe Schmoe a schollarship.
Trust me all of the big coaches do it. Coach K does it. Royboy does it.
