Recruiting over guys is a lot different than straight up asking a kid if he had ever thought about transferring.

If the current guys can beat out the guys who are being recruited, they'll play. I don't see a problem with this.

I dont WANT them to force anyone out, but if he is that much better, ill find a way to sleep at night, and the player leaving will land on his feet. But Freeman was forced only because Lick didnt want him anymore, not for anyone better. I may be wrong, but its a little dif

Say Kelm commits. We have no scholarship for Barnes unless we pull one from someone else.

Keep in mind, I really would like both of them, but it'd come at the expense of one of our scholarship athletes. And to tell one of your players that you need his scholarship for a better player, doesn't usually go over real well.

There is no question we need to go with a talent upgrade. That is why Greg is trying so hard to go for this tyupe of players. Did not the first year he was surprised how much talent would be needed to compete in the Big 12 versus MVC which is a defensive league?

What do you mean it doesn't go over very well? Look at Duke or UNC or KU or UCLA or anywhere...especially the middle-level teams like us. Everyone recruits over their players....it would be absolutely nuts to not try and get all the talent you can get all of the time. If some of the players read the writing on the wall and decide to go play elsewhere, that's just the way it is.

If we ever, and I mean EVER, pass on a top talent just because we don't want to hurt someone's feelings, then we might as well cash in our chips and get out.

We should always be trying to get as much top talent as possible, regardless of who is currently on the roster.

I'm not saying don't recruit over players.....do that every year.

I'm saying don't say you're going to put a kid on scholarship and then take it back later. Down the road, some marginal kid (who may be a sleeper) may not consider ISU because some other kid got his scholarship pulled for a recruit.

There's consequences to such a move. Actually pulling the process through which a kid pays for school is just not cool to me.

If you've told a kid before hand that that may be the case, whatever, fine. But if you commit to a school on scholarship, you sure as hell don't plan on it getting pulled. And that's something other coaches could use against us, as well. "Hey, if you don't perform your first two years, they could always pull your scholarship!"

Of course, I bet we have one more defection making this all moot (or we tell a kid he won't get playing time to persuade him), but to pull one from a kid for a recruit is just....weak. And I don't think we'd do such a thing. Everyone says Mac's an honorable guy....and I think he is.....you guys flipped out on Wes for not honoring a commitment to play for our school.......that'd be the same thing.

Exactly - I don't see why people are worried about this. 2010 is two years away. This won't be an issue until then.

Our situation is really simple. We have Colvin in Gilstrap coming in next year. Then we have Dykstra, Kadima, and Kelm most likely all in 2010. that would be full from a scholarship standpoint. then if HB commits to us (or our backup who will remain unnamed) someone will be taken off scholarship or some one will transfer away from ISU to make room. Its not as complicated as we think.
