Kyle Kelm is.....

This discussion isn't even about our situation anymore.

I'm just amazed at the number of people that a) don't know what overrecruiting means (it means that you want to upgrade talent with each recruiting class - it does not mean to cut someones scholarship for a better player) and b) that don't think that pulling a kid's scholarship is unethical....at best.

Regardless of whether things work out or not (they likely will), well......if a scholarship is a year by year thing, and a program only needs to make a one year commitment to a player, I'm sure most of you are totally cool that Wes decided this year wasn't a good year for him to be at Iowa State.

You just made the point. Players are not forced to stay and players are not guaranteed 4 years.

Do you have a career? Are you guaranteed 4 years?

I'm not talking about whether or not they are bound/guaranteed anything. There, however, is an expectation that is there that a player will be there 4 (5) years.

People were pissed at Wes cause things weren't working out for him. Should a coach go up to a player and say "Hey, things aren't working out here for you." in an effort to try and free up their scholarship?

What are you guys upset about? This is all hypothetical. We shouldn't assume anything. Let the coaching staff handle it.

I'm glad gmac is in charge and not someone who thinks that once the scholly's are filled two years into the future to pack it in and stop recruiting. Because its not like players ever leave the program early. I'm sure all the players are sitting around thinking 'oh god, we didn't think anyone would be leaving early'...yeah right.

It's so shady to assume 1 or 2 players may leave the program in two years. We really need to stop offering top 130 guys immediately.

This situation also goes both ways. Why should a recruit that signs on the dotted line not have to stay at that school 4 years. Yet a coach can't tell the kid they need to go somewhere else. This is big business.

Mac makes 700 grand a year. He better recruit over some of the guys with less talent.

I'm not even talking about the coaching staff anymore. It's more about whether or not it's right to take away an athlete's scholarship for another recruit.

:skeptical:

You honestly think that if Kelm commits, I'd say we should stop recruiting the #3 recruit in the country?

Recruiting over does not mean taking away scholarships from athletes unless it was understood from both parties that such a situation could/would happen.

I would think we could run a little better program than that... I suppose it's a balence between current needs vs future potential and there is pressure to preform but... this could have long term impact down the road

For all we know, that could be the case. That's why we should just let the coaches handle it.

Duke never fills their scholarships, but UNC almost always does.
As for the scholarship, I have some of the same concerns, but the staff knows what they are doing. Just wait and see instead of engaging in a pointless argument.

UNC is an exception right now. They have 2 to 3 players leave early every year to go to the NBA. Like I said in an earlier post. If you continuosly recruit top 25 talent you can fill up your scholarship count. When you don't sign one top 150 player, you should not

I think most hear are not understanding what I am trying to say. I am FOR us trying to recruit over players and to get better recruits. We better or we are never going to be any good. But I am AGAINST us doing that if it means promising a scholarship to somebody that is not currently available.

I think most people would agree with me if it was not about ISU. As a matter of fact, people on this board were ripping Gundy and Prince last recruiting season for giving out more scholarships than they had.

Hard to argue that. But not every kid is the same.

Also I completely agree with your last line, as long as it isn't at the expense of another individual. It is Greg McDermott's fault that Boozer, Mann, etc are on the team. He signed them. It's not fair for them to get the boot (this is all hypothetical) b/c he missed on them

Dear Gary (on Florida's recruiting) - CBSSports.com

Gary Parrish addressed this issue in his blog way back on Nov. 4th.

Barely a few days later, current FL PG, Jai Lucas, and McD's AA, decides to transfer because he realizes he's not good enough, and better players are on the way. That's what big time coaches with two national championships do.

It very well may be.

Of course, what happens if Kelm commits, Barnes commits and Gilstrap gets that extra year. :cute:

You don't get it!! It's not the same. It is one thing to recruit over a player b/c he is better. It is another thing to give him another players scholarship. Donovan did not do that.

Is this that hard to get?

Actually you don't get it. You are automatically assuming McDermott will be giving Barnes someone else's scholarship, which is almost certainly not the case. Gary explained that it's not worth worrying about, because these things are common and they always work out. This is two years away, and a lot can happen.

Eh, it's sort of the same, but still.

Let's move away from ISU (and maybe a thread split from the actual Kelm stuff might be better).

Basically, the only thing I'm getting at anymore, is do some fans think it's not unethical to pull someone's scholarship for a recruit?

I think it is unethical, but I also don't think that will be the case at ISU.

I am confident that McDermott will not pull a scholarship from someone who has been promised it.

edit: unless they deserve it, i.e. violation of team rules

.

I don't know that it's Greg's (or anyone's) fault....recruiting is inexact at best, some guys develop into better players throughout college and some peak when they're 18.

Do you think Greg would pull their scholarship IF they are working hard in school and at basketball and if they want to stay and contribute in any way they can? I doubt it. But do you think one or both of these guys might leave on their own? If they really love basketball and want to play, there's a good chance they will. They are going to see the handwriting on the wall that they will play very few minutes at ISU, but there are small conference programs where they could start and even be stars.
