Kyle Kelm is.....

I'm still not sure I understand our scholarship situation. I'm assuming we have enough for Kelm and Barnes to commit?

Current scholarship players that are getting recruited over will see the writing on the wall and depart to another university in order to see playing time. Trust the coaches on this one as they will take care of the scholarship situation in due time.

Ummm.... no! The way I understand our current situation, we don't even have room for Kelm, much less Barnes.

Obviously someone will be transferring or quiting. And if Barnes wants to commit, then another one would have to leave I believe?

I'm guessing there will always be "room" for Barnes if he wants to come.

Well, with the way things are have gone for the past few years, maybe McDermott just assumes that there will be more attrition after the season ends.

There will be room for Barnes. Even though the talent on the team is getting better, there still needs to be much better talent on the team so it can get back the winning Big 12 titles. I am sure McD and staff are very aware of that.

Let McDermott and staff worry about the scholarship situ. I see young players on the bench who probably aren't going to climb to PT ladder given the even younger players ahead of them. It will work itself out.

It does work itself out, but if I was one of the players who could see the writing on the wall, why not leave now? Why burn another year sitting on the bench?

The only problem for ISU is that would mean we have less schollie players on the team, but GMac has to realize he can't expect players to stay if he's recruiting over them.

This 2010 recruiting class is looking pretty good. Hope it pans out

I agree. Basketball recruiting in general seems to be going pretty well. Gilstrap and Colvin next year. Dykstra, Kadima already in the fold the year after, with Kelm and Barnes as possibilities. Staten already verbally committed. Slowly, but surely, McDermott seems to be getting some stabilization and talent in place. Hopefully, people remain patient. I am still pretty confident that he is a good fit for Iowa State and will have success that will satisfy all of us (ok, most of us....some won't be satisfied without multiple national championships)

Hopefully the nut-job fans that get outraged after every loss will stay patient til about the 2011 season,we could be damn good.

But I wouldnt mind if those same nut jobs jumped ship and went somewhere else.

If Chim Kadima gets ranked in the top 150, with the addition of HB, we would have all 4 kids in the '10 class that are ranked in the top 150. Gotta believe that would be a top 20 class.

By my count we are at the limit of 13 scholarships right now:

Sr.: Haluska, Peterson, Thompson
Jr.: Vanderbeken
So.: Staiger, Garrett, Brackins, Boozer
Fr.: Buckley, Eikmeier, Hamilton, Mann, Pomlee

We lose 3 seniors this year and have two incoming committs, Colvin & Gilstrap. That leaves 1 open scholarship which could go to this guy Kelm, whoever he is.

We lose 1 senior the following year and have two incoming committs already, Dykstra & Kadina. If we don't get Kelm and give that scholarship to a walk-on for one year only, we would be at the limit of 13 for the next three years. If we do get Kelm or if we get Harrison Barnes, we would need to free up a scholarship for the 2010/2011 season. That could happen if Brackins leaves for the NBA after his junior year. If he doesn't, will someone transfer? Probably. After all, there's a logjam of 9 players in 2 recruiting classes. They cannot all play, and there's a good chance at least one of them will end up transferring someplace where they can get on the floor.

Are we in trouble by scholarship count? I don't think so, but it looks like we would not be in the market for new recruits other than Harrison Barnes in the next two seasons.

Dude. We're Iowa State. We aren't allowed to have recruiting classes ranked in the top 20.
