Rhoads should get a shot next fall

Defensive line should be a major improvement for ISU next season if they do not have attrition issues. The LB corps needs a big upgrade in talent though.

OL will lose 4 of 5 starters though and the starting QB. That may make it hard to keep up with the Joneses

I hope he isn't back, but the people that call in to the coaches call in show always sound like they love Paul and that he can still turn it around. It drive me nuts listening to it today, because people were saying they still see 4 wins on our schedule.

i hope JP isn't listening and thinking that CPR should come back next year.

Those people have made it impossible to listen to that show. The one woman that called and was respectfully asking why we should be happy with the win loss record was put on in the last 30 seconds of the show, while while all of the CPR lovers were given tons of time. I doubt it was just coincidence.

I just think the defense has a chance to be pretty decent next year

Wrong. We return 2 starters on OL (Burton/Campos) and another (Philbert) who plays as much or more than Dagel already.

And there are promising young linebackers out there. Harvey and Northrup are exciting athletes and Jones/Harris/Peters will be Senior leaders. Thought Seonbuchner looked good early before (apparently?) getting injured.

Our defense could be decent but it isn't going to matter much if we get beat 40-21 or 60-21 every year.

Omoile, Lalk, Taiese & Dagel have all started games this year and all are going to exhaust their eligibility. Lalk might be the best OL on the team

Mark Mangino OC for National Champions 2000
Tom Herman OC for National Champions 2014

Yup, Paul just hasn't quite found the right guy to help him with the offense.

Well....Herman has said something like... he only learned how to be an OC once he got to Ohio St

If Rhoads is back next year with new coordinator.....the clock resets. You can't possibly give new coordinators one year to clean up the mess. At least that's what we'll be told.

I don't think Rhoads will be fired. Would I like to see a new coach? Yeah, but we aren't buying anyone out. I think after this year Wally retires and Shane takes over at DC. Shane I believe would be more aggressive. Mangino will probably stick around for 2 more years or if he gets another job Sturdy gets OC. As much as I would like to see us go to a pro style attack I just don't think it happens.

We don't have the money or donors that will just throw money around and buy people out.

Paul may have too much autonomy. If JP had forced him to go outside the program instead promoting Messingham, which was an absolute disaster, we could be in a different place. It seems that CPR's ego may be getting the best of him. Right now, we are a QB away from being a good football team. If you swap Sam with Mahomes, Boykin and Beathard, those games may fall the other way.

You have to give the staff credit on the improved DLine recruiting, the decision to go with the 3-4 and the WR Talent is excellent. We've had the best WR's on the field aside from Doctson who is clearly a pro.

So, yes, I would love to see a splash hire and fun young Coach come in. Get out of the conservative rut that CPR seems to be in, but I don't believe he is fired based on the strength of schedule. That said, with Lanning getting some experience this year, and his ability to run and pass he could be special and next year could be very different. So I think CPR stays, and I don't think we need to be 100% doom and gloom because of it.

Pollard had the funds to fire Rhoads last year. He doesn't want to do it.

Just like with McDermott.

Like I keep saying, I don't think Pollard will have a choice this year. His hand will be forced. Geoffrey was not as involved as Leath is, and Leath seems less likely to put up with more crap.

Also, all it takes is about 8600 people to not renew season tickets ($425) and donate the minimum $100, and you're losing more than $4.5 million each year.

Link please. I've never seen Herman say one bad thing about ISU.

I don't have the link. But it was discussed here a few months ago. Never said that Herman said anything bad about Iowa State. He's often talked about how he learned various things from his various mentors. From Rhoads he said he learned....."passion".

BTW, Messingham is the OC at Indiana and they are 4-3 right now. They lost to Ohio State 34-37, Pen State 29-7, and blew a 28 point lead, to lose to Rutgers 55-52. Messingham's big problem at ISU was that he was trying to run Herman's offense, not his. Also, Sturdy is Air Raid offense, not Pro Style. BTW, Tom Herman's University of Houston is 6-0 in Conference USA.

2 new coordinators + Paul still equals disaster. I don't care who they are.

If Rhoads is back next year you can look forward to two things Another loss to Iowa and another two win season....

Also look forward to a half empty stadium

I think that was Herman saying more about him than ISU...he meant it as an honest evaluation of himself.

I read it as Paul needs an experienced OC to be in charge...which was supposed to be what we have this year, but what the heck, man?

Messingham is quality control assistant, not OC. Not even close, nice try though.

I think ISU is cursed. If/when Rhoads gets fired he'll get a DC job elsewhere and have the best defense in college. Same thing for MM. We are the Bermuda Triangle for college coaches.

Where have I heard this sort of post before? I thought the DL was going to be a major improvement this year. Weren't they going to shock the world or something like that? Our LB corps have needed an upgrade since AJK and Jake left. And the "if they don't have attrition" part- we always have attrition and I can't imagine this off season will be better. Our OL will once again be inexperienced. Tough to see how we could be competitive.

Paul has to go. With Iowa and UNI off the home schedule next year, I think one of the few tricks left to sell tickets is a new coach. Both coordinators are out the door either way-just clean house completely.
