“Several weeks ago, I was shocked to learn that I tested positive for a stimulant that is banned by the NFL. I have never knowingly ingested a banned substance, but like most players, I take nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, I now know that supplements are not regulated and thus may contain things that are not listed on the label. The NFL policy is very strict, so I have chosen to take immediate responsibility. I look forward to participating in team workouts, training camp and the pre-season with my team. During the suspension, I will work extremely hard to stay in top football shape and be ready to contribute immediately upon my return. I sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches, my family and fans for the impact of my mistake on the team.”

I never bought the "I didn't know it was banned" explanation with any PED users and I don't plan on starting with Knott. As a professional athlete you just have to know what's going into your body.

pretty much this. Stupid. The consequences are high enough. You get paid enough. You should know. And if you don't? Then don't take it.

Dang.

Glad he owned up.

I've heard there are LOTS of thugs that are banned...and need to really know what's going in the body.

Seems like too high of a risk to chance it. My guess is teammates told him what he took never got them caught.

Hope he learns from it and impacts the team when he can play.

Kinda my thought. As a pro, you know what you are putting in your body. They have full time staff to ensure things like this, at least I would hope they do.

In this day and age, if I were Jake, I would SUE THE ***** out of the manufacturer of that supplement. Unregulated or not, if there are items that they put into the supplement that ARE NOT listed on the ingredients they are liable for heavy heavy damages - especially to pro and collegiate careers. If he doesn't do that, it's pretty telling, IMHO.

I hate the fact that I agree with you. Knowing the consequences, how can somebody in that position not know exactly what they're ingesting?

I can't believe players wouldn't know what's banned. But I can believe that players take things that may have something in it they weren't aware of. That said, they're professional athletes and they have to take the responsibility to do their due diligence.

While I tend to agree with "you need to know what's going into your body", unless you make your own supplements from raw materials you grow and produce yourself you can't 100% know what's going into your body. Absolutely he needs to be more careful about what he's taking, but no one can be 100% certain.

And one major difference is he owned up to it.

Not making excuses and I agree with the suspension. Just saying you can't be 100% certain of what you're taking.

not necessarily. Labeling laws for supplements have room for some weaseling. Words like "spices" "natural flavors" and "artificial flavors" can be very vague and are perfectly legal.

Do athletes who get suspended for PEDs commonly sue the manufacturers? If not, there's probably a reason why, and it would probably be the same reason Jake doesn't. I wouldn't let that influence your thinking.

It can be an easy excuse, but it can also be a legitimate one. What if Oscar Meyer started putting steroids illegally into its hot dogs and didn't include that on its label?

It's actually pretty easy. Just because what is listed on the label may be totally within legal product to take, all it takes is one tainted bottle of legal supplements to show a positive test for PED's. These supplement manufacturers produce many different supplements, some legal and some illegal in different sports. It isn't that far fetched to think items can get a little mixed up and cross contaminate each other.
