Before the last two rounds of realignment ISU (30k) was fourth in the Big 12 in enrollment with huge Texas (51k) and large Texas Tech (41k) ahead of it and pretty much on par with OU (31k). Obviously the Big 12 lost both UT and OU but all 8 schools we have added are larger than ISU:

1. ASU 75k
2. UCF 69k
3. UA 53k
4. UC 51k
5. UH 47k
(6. TTU 41k)
7. CU 37k
8. UU 35k
9. BYU 35k

ISU went from 4th in a 10 team league to 10th in a 16 team league. We also went from being about 59% of the size of the largest school to being 40% - less than half! - the size of the league's largest school.

Note that if our former big boy, Texas, was still in the league they would be (barely) fourth in enrollment in the Big 12.

For the record here is the rest of the list.

10. ISU 30k
11. KU 29k
12. OSU 26k
13. WVU 24k
14. BU 21k
15. KSU 20k
16. TCU 13k

EDIT - apparently I had bad info on ASU enrollment. I have updated the inperson enrollment for ASU. They have another 80k or more online enrollment.

I had no idea Cinnci's enrollment was that large.

The top five schools on the list have a large outreach programs to bring in older adults that are already working and allowing them to take night courses or online course work and work towards a college degree.
ISU has a very limited course offering in this area, they do have a graduate program for teachers to get a masters in education going on the weekends, but not a lot for the average person.

We're talking about an athletic conference, so I don't think anyone cares what the schools' enrollments are.

How about comparing something more relevant like the size of stadiums and average attendance? Iowa State ranks very high in both of those categories.

Stadium size is another issue altogether:

1. BYU 63,470
2. ISU 61,500
3. TTU 60,454
4. WVU 60,000
5. OSU 53,885
6. ASU 53,599
7. UU 51,444
8. UA 50,782
9. CU 50,183
10. KSU 50,000
11. UCF 48,000
12. TCU 47,000
13. BU 45,140
14. KU 47,233*
15. UH 40,000
16. UC 38,088

*Current construction to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will result in a reduction in capacity to around 40k seats. During construction they will play home games in Arrowhead - capacity 76,416. I don't know if they will artificially limit capacity.

ISU went from being 3rd to being 2nd with the departure of UT and OU.

I just looked this up the other day

ASU has 80K students on campus

between all their campuses and online university, they have 144K enrollees.
ASU was in online instruction WAY early. They were probably the first major actual university to build that out. Not to mention they even have a satellite in LA I believe.

Now let's do BB arena sizes:

1. BYU 19,000
2. KU 16,300
3. TTU 15,300
4. UU 15,000
5. UA 14,655
6. ISU 14,267
7. ASU 14,198
8. WVU 14,000
9. OSU 13,611
10. UC 12,012
11. CU 11,064
12. KSU 11,000
13. UCF 9,432
14. TCU 8,500
15. BU 7,500
16 UH 7,100

So ISU went from being the 3rd* largest to the 6th largest.

*ISU was 4th largest before Texas moved from the Erwin Center (16,540) into their new smaller BB capacity Moody Center (10,763) fall of '22.

Someone needs to rank the average attendance for football and basketball. I don't have time to do this right now, but I'm sure ISU would rank very high in both categories.

I was getting to that but it takes a little time...

This is a very interesting point regarding enrollment sizes. Naturally, you would think that equates to large alumni networks. That would hopefully amount to more donations and economic stability...but regarding college athletics I'm beginning to realize everything I think is logical, doesn't matter in reality.

In 2023 BB is fourth:

1. KU - 16,300
2. BYU - 14,117
3. UA - 14,115
4. ISU - 13,375
5. TTU - 13,222
6. WVU - 12,004
...

In 2018-22* FB is second:

(UT - 80,668 - 80.57%)
(OU - 70,864 - 88.4%)
1. BYU - 49,758 - 78.4%
2. ISU - 48,604 - 79.0%
3. TTU - 46,418 - 76.8%
4. OSU - 46,154 - 83.2%
5. WVU - 44,032 - 73.4%
6. KSU - 41, 402 - 82.8%
...

*These stats are of questionable value because they include the COVID year of 2020 with a wide variety of way of dealing with game attendance.

Shocked to see Utah with a 15,000 seat arena. Their average attendance last year was 7,900.
