Alford's woes

Alford has been unable to atract quality HS recruits recently. He has gone to prep schools, Junior colleges, and non-qualifiers to fill his roster. Perry had lots of interest in spite of his academic problems, but the only reason he signed with Iowa was that was about his only choice this spring. Crawford's HS coach says Crawford is not ready for college bball. 7 ft. and 190 lbs? And now even the Iowa boys are abandoning Alford. Reed to UNI, Thompson to ISU, and Bohannon to Wisconsin.

I agree that is going to be rough going for Iowa for a while. They have no inside depth or presence of any sort. They could be playing a 6'8" center this year if things get real bad. That isn't going to win many games in the Big 11. They do have some guard depth, assuming Tyler Smith is the real deal.

Basketball? What's basketball?

Is that the game with the little round white ball and a long skinny stick with an odd shaped head?

lOl..no kidding. Its hard to get some bball discussions going this close the season opener of football. I love college football but I gotta say that basketball is my number one.

Not surprising to see the Perry kid not make it. The prep school he attended is on the watch list by the NCAA for questionable academic practices. I believe this is the same prep school that former ISU recruit Theo Davis attended.

Wait...basketball is that sport where they roll out a rubber mat and two guys wearing spandex fight with each other for a few minutes...no?

I agree, bball is definitely #1 for me too, although I can smell the tailgating already!

So Iowa inside and Clones inside will be an even match this year until Brackins and Thompson arrive next year?

I still think we have the edge inside. You cannot rely on Seth Gorny (sp) as a post presence. Iowa will have good guards. Tony Freeman is going to be a stud and they still have Haluska. Just as long as we beat the **** out of them!

Once McDermott gets his big recruit(s)hopefully more additions to Brackins- Iowa will have a hard time competing with us. I hope.....

Wait! I got it! Basketball...they run in a big circle many times...and sometimes...they jump over some sticks that are sometimes called hurdles.

That's gotta be it...

Apparently Iowa Hawkeyes 7-0 recruit is not coming :frown3qg: and two others:eek4wd: :eek4wd: cannot yet get past the NCAA clearing house. Alford is scrounging for some replacements. Some with adequate grades.

That NCAA clearing house must be a Beast.

It si always upsetting somebody's applecart.

I think Iowa is Only Short 2 Kids

Unless I've missed something, I think only 2 kids haven't made it to campus for Iowa- VanderClaus & Perry. I believe they added a 7' from Cali named Crawford so their net loss is only 1 player.

I'm not predicting great things for the Hawks this season, but I think they will give ISU a tough time in December and finish somewhere in the middle of the Big 10.

I know Alford was lamenting a bit about the loss of Perry & VanderBeek, but I doubt he was relying on those guys to play more than 5-7 mpg this season. The key to Iowa doing well this season is Tyler Smith & the 2 JUCO recruits (Tate & Johnson). If Tyler Smith is athletic as Hawk fans report he should be able to move inside for 8-10 mpg.

I see a starting line-up of Freeman, Henderson & Haluska as very solid on the perimeter. In the post Tate & Looby are question marks, but each is a JUCO transfer and Looby practiced with the Hawks last year so I don't think its quite the same as ISU relying on 2 true freshman(Marsden&Taggart) for significant minutes last year. Then add Smith & Johnson into the mix they could be OK, but theres a thin margin of error if they suffer injuries or some of the newcomers are busts.

I think the big question for Iowa is Alfords contract. The Rag keeps bringing it up so the new AD might feel some pressure to extend Alford- but if I'm the AD I'd wait til the season ends.

If I was the AD, I would wait until after the ISU game to see how my team was trending.

How much does Crawford weigh? Is he bulked up at all?

Who comes off the bench at guard?

If Iowa starts Freeman, Henderson and Haluska, who comes off the bench at guard? If they have foul trouble starting where do you go? Those guys will have to play lots of minutes.

Wasn't Looby a backup for one of our guys at CC? Isn't he the one that averaged like 1.2 points a game?
