So this is 95% of what I eat at a Chinese buffet. So I'm probly not the one to ask.

Breaded shrimp. Lots of shrimp
Crab Rangoon again heavy dose
Fried biscet/ doughnuts
Bowl of hot and sour soup add soy and mustard
Soft serve ice cream use soup bowl

If I order Chinese I get Ye Shang beef but it's never a buffet option.

Google Nate Stanley or Deacon Hill pretty sure they’ve done reviews of all the buffets in Iowa City.

Thats a shame about the Peking. 10 years or so ago I worked in that area and it was pretty good. Apparently it had been an absolute dump for a long time but was damaged in one of the floods and got completely redone shortly before that.

Peking was my first thought as well. When I was in grad school we'd go there for lunch from time-to-time and it was always good. There was also another one on 2nd street closer to Coralville that was pretty good but I think that went out of business.

If you want my opinion, skip the buffet and get 3 Samurai.

Jeez, IC actually has good legit Chinese, why do this to yourself?!? Szechuan House is a favorite of ours (order the Kung Pao Chicken, the Crispy Chicken, scallion pancakes) otherwise Taste of China on 1st Ave has good American Chinese.

I forgot about Szechuan House. Great traditional Chinese food.

By way of explanation...
We like buffets because we can get a little of this and a little of that, and go back for more of the ones we like. Eating at an unfamiliar table service Chinese restaurant is always a crap shoot...each restaurant cooks with different spice levels and my gut doesn't approve of spices anymore.
So, last night we ended up checking a couple of the buffets on Google. We gave Peking another shot because it was next to our hotel. At 6.15p half the bins were empty. The ones that were not empty were pretty much dried out. Hard pass. So then we went to China house. Full building, but it's take out only.
Welp...
At least there was a Hu Hot.

After seeing some of the health inspection reports on some of the buffets in Ames and Des Moines area not sure I would trust a Chinese buffet these days without a little research first. I mean here is an example of the Mongolian Buffet in Ames (which I have thankfully never ate at): https://iowacapitaldispatch.com/202...h-infested-rice-old-meat-and-mouse-droppings/ and if you do a google search that's not the only disgusting report you'll find. The Hibachi Grill and Supreme Buffet in West Des Moines is a big buffet and it's had some pretty gross reports over the years as well. I get it, sometimes a surprise inspection is going to catch a place on a bad day and that's not the typical for them but ones that are frequently getting violations are the ones I'd try to avoid unless you like a good case of food poisoning.

I'm not much of a fan of buffets post college. They just kind of give me an unsettling feeling. There's some places I go to still that i wouldn't be shocked to see on a report like this though

Welp...we're turning 70 in a few months; I haven't had food poisoning from a buffet yet...

I eat raw cookie dough when I bake, too. o_O
