by that logic ISU will only have like 3 sports then (FB, MBB, WBB)

also, right or wrong, i have a hard time believing jamie is going to cut a sport he was an All American in and his son is a member of the ISU program.
i didn't say "will", i said "should". Track and field should be considered among the other sports. I also believe we pay a high salary for the track and field coach compared to our peers.

track and field should

Complete side note but it’s an absolute shame Iowa State is in the second best baseball conference and we’re the only member school without a team
When i was in college I was good friends with the Pres and VP of the club baseball at the time.

Jaime Pollard was always open to having meetings with club teams to see if the AD could help provide anything to them. Well they asked him if ISU would ever consider bringing baseball back and to make a long story short. He said they would pick up Hockey before Baseball.

To my fellow ISU hockey fans that might not be a shock since how successful our program is (12 final fours, national championship runner up 2 years ago, and first club team to ever play on ESPN3), but I don't see ISU having the money and desire to bring back Baseball since it is such a southern dominated sport. I don't think we will see D1 hockey anytime soon, but I do know that the boosters and Iowa State do have a plan in place to bring D1 Hockey to Ames if they ever pull the trigger. I can tell you for 100% certainly it isn't Hockey at Hilton too.

Probably depends on what the NCAA decides to do with the requirement for providing a minimum number of men's and women's sports. I think ISU is pretty close to the limit right now...

They may not drop it long term, but I am sure they would grant a waiver for almost everyone for a short term. If not, there aren't going to be many division one schools left. Look at all the schools like UNI and Drake that would have to go away from D1.

they do yes.

something that even as a TF/XC fan ive found odd when jamie has not done so for other sports.

i guess its worked though. wish he would take a similar approach with MBB

in the times we're in and considering T&F is probably not bringing in revenue that could be an option to scale back if they haven't already.

I'm speaking way out of turn here but it should be explored for a university to add more men's sports in that a portion of its revenue could help support women's sports within the department. I've only ever heard problems about Title IX vs. benefits but then again like I said I know extremely little of the subject.

We could only get rid of two sports, correct? I thought I heard that we were only two over the minimum required to be a D1 school (or something to that effect).

He's a bean-counter at heart.

I'm going to be really curious how the national debate over the role of sports spending and college mission plays out. Some programs are/were so horribly managed (thinking WAZZU and their giant red hole from Leach and other decisions) that it's hard to see what comes out the other side of all this.

What men's sport would you propose adding that would accomplish that?

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, but across the country, football and basketball are the only sports that are a net gain.

Yeah that's probably true. I didn't know if some regions sports were a big enough deal they could make a revenue.

Easy cuts as far as objections since small staff and mostly foreign student athletes but how much money does it really save? The whole point is to reduce costs and that just doesn't do much. This would be little more than nibbling around the edges of the $85M or so budget. Every little bit helps, of course, but it's just a little bit.

Do they still allow drinking at the club hockey games? I thought that was a thing.

If they ever got hockey keeping beer OK would draw plenty of filled seats.

Title IX disagrees with this assemebt.

ISU could drop the two smallest women's sports and still be in compliance with Title IX's proportionality prong with regard to both scholarships and participation. Mostly, because the total student population is over 56% male (not 50-50).

Despite what's being pumped out by the local newspapers, cutting sports is probably the last step.

The article linked in the post you quoted indicated that the NCAA did, in fact, deny a request for a "temporary" waiver...but that was back in March, I think.

If we could get 25,000 loyal alumni to give $400 each, there's your ten million.

Just saying. Might be easier than scimming money from a casino ...
