whether or not he gets his Jersey retired, it’s cool that he reps ISU quite a bit and Purdy as well. I also believe he gives back to athletics/NIL as well.
Who do you think some of these anonymous donors are for We Will? ;)

I'm in the camp he shouldn't get a number retirement. Just didn't do enough while here. You guys on here care way too much about this though, many colleges with much more deserving players never got theirs retired. Off the top of my head Michael Crabtree from Texas Tech doesn't have his retired, hell Patrick Mahomes from there might be a better Tyrese comparison. Mahomes didn't do a whole lot in College but has obviously done a lot in the NFL.

There are definitely other ways to honor players.

People saying it’s should be based on play here should consider that he was good here just hurt and playing for a coach who was also hurt.
I have considered it. His jersey still shouldn't be retired. He'll likely go down as the best pro athlete to ever come from Iowa State (or Purdy), but he didn't accomplish enough while he was at Iowa State, even though he was really good.

Some interesting facts:

  • Given the limited amount of jersey numbers the NCAA allows, ISU does not retire jersey numbers, just jerseys.
  • There are only 2 requirements you must meet to be eligible to have your ISU jersey retired: must be in ISU Hall of Fame, and must graduate from ISU.
  • Only 7 men's basketball players have had their jersey retired.
  • Only one football player (Mike Cox) has had his jersey retired.
That last fact really amazed me. You could probably win a lot of bar bets with that trivia question.

Wonder if Brock Purdy will be the second football player to get his jersey retired. Besides being a star in the NFL, he broke every ISU QB record in existence.

Isn’t Rocco on track to break many of Purdy’s records?

He about a jersey that says DAVIS on it. 2,000 yards not once, but twice. That is hard to beat.
Yep, probably the most impressive achievement ever by a Cyclone football player. Unfortunately, I don't think Troy ever graduated from Iowa State (he left a year early) so he wouldn't be eligible to have his jersey retired.

You think Tech will never honor Mahomes in future at some point when he can visit?

Tyrese and Niang really had a tight window to come to his Olympic ceremony at Hilton.

Number retirements and all that is dumb and everyone should stop. Pro teams are different.
Number "retirement" is dumb. Hanging a Jersey is fine, and is great recognition. College career, not pro is all that should be considered for that, and there should be a formal criteria and selection process. Not because your daddy is coach like some places. The bar should be very high.

Just name a new restaurant after him. Maybe elevate the Hilton food offerings. We can order a Hoiberger with Garlic Fizer Fries, etc.

Way up there
Tom Brady's number isn't retired at Michigan, if his pro career isn't good enough to get his college number retired, no one's is. What they did after ISU should have no impact on ISU retiring their number. Tyrese was great at ISU but his resume here is short and not that impressive, really good but not one of the best to ever play here. There would be other 1 and 2 year guys we've had who would be more deserving based on what they did at ISU.

Mahomes will be inducted into both the Texas Tech Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor following a unanimous vote of the Ring of Honor committee. He will become the eighth member of the prestigious Ring of Honor, joining the likes of fellow greats such as Donny Anderson (2012), E.J. Holub (2012), Dave Parks (2012), Gabe Rivera (2014), Zach Thomas (2016), Michael Crabtree (2021) and Elmer Tarbox (2021).

I didn't look up Ring of Honor, just retired numbers, but that is exactly the type of thing that I was alluding to.

It doesn't have to be a jersey hanging from Hilton, but something will have to be thrown up to honor him. Great ambassador and supporter of ISU. It's a big deal for any program to have a superstar playing in the NBA. Isn't tough to remember Jordan played at NC or Shaq at LSU. Pays huge dividends for the schools having these connections. Recruiting, funding, fan interest. Be a good idea for ISU to stay tight with Tyrese.
