Yes, yet another computer help thread. I appreciate any advice/info that can be provided, I know a lot of you are must smarter at this stuff than I am.

I had been having some computer issues and I had suspected that my hard drive was starting to go bad. Last night my computer wouldn't even boot, every time and in every mode that Windows gave me an option for it gave me the blue screen and said that I needed to run the CHKDSK utility. I ran the recovery console from the WinXP disk and ran CHKDSK /r like it said I should. It got 54% done when the following error came up...

"The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"

So am I screwed or what?? I didn't have time this morning to try and boot the hard drive to see if the utility did anything, but I would suspect that it didn't. All I really want is to get all my personal files off and drop kick the hard drive into the next county. Also the drive now features a distinct "crackling" sound it didn't have before. Thanks for the help!!

You are screwed and unless you want to pay someone a lot of money you won't be getting anything off that drive. If it makes you feel any better mine crashed last week. I had it backed up though:yes:

Before you give up all hope, you should at least try to attach this HD to another computer and use it as a secondary HD. This may give you enough time to recover your files.

You can also, take out the hard drive, put it in a zip lock, put it in the freezer for a few hours. then hook it back up and see if you can get a boot. Don't ask me why it works, but sometimes it does, then drag as much info as you can to an external drive.

Good luck.
