Regardless of my political affiliation and my views on the war, I am grateful for his service to my country. He is serving our country and doing what he believes is best for this nation and I honor him for it. The War in Iraq is not just in the Middle East, it affects us in Iowa as well, and this story brings it home for all of us. Support our Heroes regardless of views on the war.

Hobt is now in the Army as a Helo Pilot.

What a great story. Is it common for servicemen to enter another branch after completing their commitment? He is clearly a great American. Please offer him heart-felt thanks from my family for keeping our country safe.

How about a little Paul Harvey "the rest of the story". You said he is from Des Moines. Is he a Cyclone? Can we get him some decals for his Chopper? Cy on Patrol.

It's common for a lot of Marines to switch branches. Some go to Navy Seal Training when they are done. Some switch to the Army. The Marine Corps is a grueling deal. Especially if you are a grunt. We train in the hardest places in the world. Marines are constently getting shot at all over the world. Basically a switch in service would do be done for two reason. The new branch has a less hazardish job or your body is broke from the Corps. I got out of the Marines due to the Body being broke from the Corps and did not want to stay in the Military any longer.

Thank you for your service and sharing this story.

As for the hat... I'm not 100% sure but I seem to recall reading that helicopter pilots consider themselves as beind descended from the calvary, as such they wear the cowboy hat.

We seem to get a lot of former Marines in the Army Guard and I love it. My 1SG just retired last weekend and was a former Marine and the guy was great. I only had a year with him but he was by far the best 1SG I have worked with. I really like getting 1 or 2 former Marines in my senior NCO slots as the level of discipline they command is truly a blessing. I have been told by a few that they choose to go this route as a way to "relax" and still be within the Military.

Now, how did I miss this thread....

JHudd has a terrific link, there. I was a Cavalry Trooper (actually, an officer) from 1988 to 1996 and 1998 to 1999. First of all, there is something you all need to know: If you ain't CAV, you ain't sh*t.

Second, Cavalrymen have an obligation to beautiful women. We don't believe in prostitution, we do what we do for the betterment of the nation, and a CAV Trooper never accepts money for sex.

I need to post a pic of my CAV hat as soon as I get back to the house. I'll try to be wearing clothing when I model it, but you know how things are.

BTW - Calvary is where Jesus gave his life for our sins. "Cavalry" are the guys who just drank all the beer in your fridge, satisfied your wife for the first time in her life, and made the cat pregnant.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, that looks like a pistol holster to me, similar to what police officers would wear.

I understand that it is a pistol holder. That's not the mystery to me. What I don't understand is why I don't recall seeing it very often, or at all in a "dress" type of event.

Phaedrus?

It is probably because I just am not "with it". I have a brother-in-law that has been a Seabee for years, and my questions for him don't stop. He always answers them, but I'm sure he's annoyed. Anyway, I think what the service people do is simply amazing.

Calvary may be where Jesus gave his life for our sins. However on the 8th while god rested... The Marines Corps took over and WE have been running the show ever since....

Well, when we get to heaven, we'll know who the streets will be guarded by.

Semper Fi, Marine!

Actually, CAV Troopers never go to heaven or hell. They go to Fiddler's Green. Which is the name of the Cavalry Anthem (It's spoken, but it's not a poem. It's a "song" in the Roman sense of spoken word.)

Fiddler's Green (From memory, obtw)

Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

Well, I promised a picture, and here it is. Note the stylish hat, the new shooting gloves I got for Christmas, (what IS that logo on them, anyway???) and the stylin' M4 carbine.

Man, it's good to be a gangsta....

Thanks for posting this story.

I was with 1/7 in 29 Palms. Everytime I see the cavalry hat I think of Robert Duvall... "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like... victory."

Nice pic Phaedrus... although I can't seem to remember receiving the standard issue ISU gloves with my deuce gear. They might have lasted longer than the black gloves and inserts though. Fast roping wasn't easy on those gloves.

Semper Fi!
