We don't know how well Barnes will actually do in college, however, he has the potential to be something great. I would whether have Barnes for four years and go dancing each of those years then to go to a mediocre bowl for one year when we mostly expect to go bowling next year. Also, worse then football, our BB team needs a shot on the arm- something to get excited for.

That's why I'd go with a good bowl. I don't think Barnes would be here for the long haul but it would do a lot to jazz up the fanbase and might make ISU more of a destination for some other big recruits.

True - but also, a bowl this year would mean ISU has to win at least one road game AND hold down the fort at home, which would mean a win against Missouri. IMO, that sort of accomplishment may be just as important for the football program as Barnes would be for the bball program.

Actually, and I'm not trying to sound like a douche here, but wouldn't Barnes be a one year deal (at least wouldn't we expect him to be) anyways? So a bowl game one year, or a 1 year player.

Of course, there's always the chance that wherever Barnes goes, he stays another year, but if he's as good as everybody thinks he is, you'd have to expect him to go NBA as soon as he can.

How many players have left a program after just one year without the team doing some damage in the rankings? Just curious. If Barnes coming to ISU and leaving after 1 year means we make the top 20, it would be one heck of a turnaround for this program as it stands right now.

Barnes even though there is no way a highly touted recruit like that is going to turn down a scholarship from NC or Duke to be at ISU.

I really wish he would come to ISU but I'm not going to get my hopes up...

I would say it would be more likely to win two road games (Baylor and K State) and two home games (A&M and Nebraska), then to win three home games. Even a win at Colorado would be more likely then Missouri.

Beasley and Walker for one. I guess Walker was a year and six games. OJ Mayo left after one year. I forgot about Jarryd Bayless for AZ last year as well. KSU was #24 in week 1, dropped out until week 13, was ranked for 4 weeks but never got higher than #22. USC was ranked # 24 in week three and never again got in the polls. AZ was rated early in the year but plunged and was never ranked again after Jan. 7th.

There were a few second year players such as the Randolph kid from LSU who left and LSU was not good at all last year.

I have to go with Barnes. Iowa State has some relatively recent tradition in basketball. We have been a good program in the past.

Plus, I think the fall-out of not signing Barnes for this staff is potentially lethal to future recruiting. We have some tradition, people know Iowa State's basketball program. If we cannot sign this guy, with all of the advantages that we have had in recruiting him, that makes every other top kid that may consider us stop and think "why couldn't they sign a hometown legend?" Add in every coach using it against us in recruiting, and I think that it is damn near necessary for Coach McDermott to sign this player.

There is a much more positive vibe around the football program at this time. You can see all that's needed to begin winning is more recruiting.

We can sneak into a minor bowl with a 6-6 record. We need at least 4 wins in our next 7 games to get to 6-6, so that probably includes a loss to Missouri. If we want anything better than that (win more than 4 of the next 7), we'd probably need to take out the Tuff Tigers.

Barnes, hands down. If we manage to go bowling this year it will be somewhere less than stellar. Barnes is a program changer.

A bowl game and it's not even close.

One player does not a team make. Barnes may be an excellent player, and he might even carry a team, but he's not going to take a bad team to the NCAA tournament on his own.

If we got 4 more wins in the Big 12 this year, it would be a HUGE step forward for the program, considering how we have started the year.

Unless it were a post-New Year's bowl, I'd say Harrison Barnes. However - I don't think it will mean the end of ISU MBB or its prospects if we don't sign him.
