Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

Just got back from our local grocery store.

Maybe I've mentioned this before, but they have a bar and a little gambling area.

I am always surprised at how many people are boozing and playing slots before noon....at a grocery store.

Does Hy-Vee still have the CEO who makes these decisions unilaterally and blames everyone else when they don't work, when everyone told him they wouldn't work? The one who fired all their 30+ year employees or took away their benefits so they'd quit?

That one retired (Randy Edeker?) The new one likely running it about the same way. At least they admitted that their prices were too high. I have my doubts that they will adjust things enough to help.

I don't know if they see big returns but the HyVee in Grimes is great for lunch. They make sandwich meals at the deli, HyChi, 5 minute pizzas, hibachi style and the traditional fried chicken type deli. They have a separate seating area from the Market Grill/Walburgers area.

In general, it's quick and pretty affordable for what you get. They're always busy too.

Went to pick up Beyond Meat the other day for the wife. It's an outrageous $11.99 for a pound.

I'd say it's not helping much.

Help? Seems to me they are doing just fine. This has been going on for the last 3 years on this board, yet they haven't sold or gone out of business and their parking lots are as full as ever (at least in the DSM area). Do they do weird things...yep. Is it hurting their business? I'm not sure it is.

"We are growing restaurants," Sharpe said. "We’re not going to be in the grocery business.

"It's best that everyone stay in what their skill sets are and move on."

lol at this comment from the Wahlburger CEO.

it would make more sense to have the market grilles be order at the counter type format. Some of the smaller Hy-Vee's are like this. No need to have a full wait staff, especially when finding help is difficult.

I think this would be best. Being an elevated fast service restaurant that can leverage items in your deli would probably be beneficial. Add things like burgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken in addition to your cold cut sandwiches with your deli sides would probably be great.
