I like doing self checkout only because I'm faster at checking out and bagging that most employees thanks to my years at Fareway growing up.
Teenagers mostly suck at bagging anyway. Not sure what the reason is, but I assume that they assume it is such an easy job and just shut their brains off during training/orientation. Thanks kid, I have been wanting to live a little on the wild side, bagging my raw chicken with my apples should do just the trick!

Not only that, putting 1 or 2 things in each bag and calling it good. I jam those ******* full each time.

They do that because the minute they pack them the way they are meant to be packed, someone complains that they are too heavy or the bag will break. So what do they do, put a few items in the bag and give you 5x more bags than you need. Either way, someone is going to complain. There is a reason when we shop that we go through self-checkout. I can pack the bags the way I want them.

I really wish Fareway would grow some balls and call out Hy-Vee in their ads. Pretty much everything they do they could make fun of in their ads.

The dumb **** Hy-Vee sells, the terrible delivery, actors telling you to buy their meat, Wahlburgers and everything involved, etc. There are just so many opportunities.
Fareway is such a better run operation. My only gripe with Fareway is they don't have cheap milk. Maybe that varies based on the market you're in, but here in Dubuque, I can go to basically any other grocery store or gas station and get a gallon of whole milk for <$3. At Fareway, for whatever reason, the cheapest gallon is typically north of $4.50. Also, while on the topic of milk, Dubuque is home to a Praire Farms processing plant. You'd think we'd get a hometown discount on milk and other dairy products, but PF is some of the most expensive stuff you'll find. And it is very subpar in comparison to say, Anderson Erickson, which is generally cheaper if you can even find it around here.

Oh I know. A lot of it is because they just go with a blanket approach that everyone is an old lady. When I was at Fareway, it was simple to look at the customer and decide how full you can make it.

Milk is a loss leader at grocery stores and Fareway decided they weren't going to let Wal-Mart dictate their milk prices anymore.

Part of that is the ****** bags they use that are prone to breaking to begin with. Thicker plastic bags exist that won't break, but they don't use them because theyre more expensive.

One data point I've heard from an IT manager at Hy-Vee is that for every Aisles Online order, Hy-Vee loses $27 of overhead, employee wages, etc. Thus why they are discontinuing it in most locations.

That had to have added up hugely over the past 2 1/2 years when it exploded in use.

This isn't surprising at all. I'm still trying to figure out how they can make money when they 1) have someone shop for all of your groceries and 2) have the infrastructure in place to store and pickup your groceries - and its all free. Or even worse, charge you $9.95 to deliver your groceries (trucks, labor, time, gas, etc.). Delivery used to be free over $100 a couple of years ago so at least they are getting something additional from people.

(I know the answer to all of the above...its making people that shop in store subsidize the cost of all of this. Which is why more and more people are shopping elsewhere.)

I do online at both and always get a gallon of AE skim.

Since inflation, Walmart has been a dime cheaper until last week, and price was the same.

Before inflation, price was the same.

I just get milk at whichever store when I need it. I trust Fareway more to give me the further out date.

One of my kids did a project in school where he compared milk prices at our HyVee to a neighboring town’s HyVee, Fareway, and Walmart. My husband works in neighboring town so he picks up my order. Fareway and Walmart had same price, HyVee in neighboring town was a dime more, HyVee in hometown was 60 cents more. And proved the point about how monopolies screw people. It’s a fifteen minute drive to the other town, which means they are totally gouging old people that can’t drive there.

Well, I dislike them for that. Haha I am not above shopping at Fareway for everything and hitting up Kwik Star for milk on the way home.

Most people cherry pick nowadays and Fareway realized that. Instead of chasing business by trying to match Wal-Mart, they decided to not trip over dollars to pick up dimes. You'd be surprised at how many items in the grocery store that are sold below cost and we all have Wal-Mart to thank for that.

Bags at the north Fareway in Ames are definitely thicker plastic than any of the HyVee ones. I immediately recycle any HyVee one and keeps the Fareway ones.

Besides, I usually take my own bags -- thermal insulated fabric types with strong handles and a zipper closing at the top. I've had kids jam pack them full, which is not desirable either.

Believe me, there is a lot more that goes into this than "they are gauging us". You even see big price differences between the same items in metro hy-vees. A person really needs to do a full shop to get a more accurate price comparison. One of the jobs I had at hy-vee was doing price comparisons with other stores and the prices were all over the map on a lot of items but in the end, most of the stores had similar prices. Dahls was most expensive on average, Hy-Vee was next, and Fareway was almost always cheaper. The truth is that if people cared so much about price, they would use more coupons. It's embarrassing how few people use coupons. I even heard "I can't use coupons if I'm on food stamps". JFC

I used to use a LOT of coupons. However, over the past few years, the number of relevant and useful (to us anyway) coupons have drastically declined in number. I hate paying store price on anything, but am now doing that most of the time.

I haven’t been in HyVee since January of 2020 but then, the produce bags were thin as a soap bubble. They drove our other pharmacies out of town so when husband gets his meds, the grocery bag is better than Walmart but way flimsier than Fareway’s.

Even with the thicker bags, people still complain. Go to Target which has thicker bags and go through a cashier vs. self-checkout. They will put two or three things in a bag and call it good. Even better is when you have something odd-sized and that is the only thing they put in a bag when more could easily go in the bag. You are never going to please everyone, someone is ALWAYS going to complain.
