How many times have you moved in your lifetime?

17 in 37 years between 6 cities.

Counting moving away to college as 1 move but not all the constant moving from home to dorm to home to study abroad to home to rental house, etc...I bet I 'moved' something like 12 times during 4 years of college.

Not too many-- but seemed definitely enough. I hate moving!

Childhood home to dorms
Dorms to apt on Lincoln Swing
Lincoln Swing to rental house in Parnell, IA (only stayed there 3 months)
Parnell to Iowa City townhouse (puke-- not the house, just the city. Only stayed 1 year)
Iowa City to NE Cedar Rapids (3.5 years)
NE Cedar Rapids to SW Cedar Rapids (current home-- almost 12 years now)

  • 19 moves.
  • 5 states.
  • 10 cities/towns
  • Haven’t moved since 2006.

I don’t count temporary stopovers “back-homeâ€￾ (twice) or moving within dorm at Iowa State (once).

When I think about my move-stats, it seems like I should’ve lived in numerous cities throughout the U.S. and exotic destinations elsewhere. Unfortunately, quite a bit involved short moves to a different residence mainly for employment/relationship circumstance, nothing outside-of-U.S., and no warm-weather/coastal areas.

Boo!

Amusing aside (to me, at least): I had a cat who lived with me for about 17 years. He experienced 12 moves during his lifetime. I’m sure he loved every minute of those migrations. (Insert Pirate)

When my boys were small we had dogs in a couple of the places we lived in. Both times, cross-country moves forced us to give up those dogs. I told my older son (not quite four at the time) that we would NOT get another dog until we bought a house and we KNEW we would be able to have pets in it. Over a year later after moving to Iowa, we bought a house. We moved in on December 20th. Practically the first words out of my son's mouth as he sat in his new bedroom: "Mommy, when are we getting a dog?" I did some calling around, and on Christmas day we drove out west on 30 to a place referred to as "the Old Red Barn" and chose a beautiful Brittany pup who lived with us for the next 12 years until cancer took him. :)

Moral of the story (for me) - never promise that kid anything I couldn't follow through on; he had an excellent memory!
