One of the most famous cases of cheating in a marathon came at the Boston Marathon in 1980. Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line but was disqualified when officials discovered she jumped into the race about a mile from the end.

Actually the marathon is two races: a twenty miler and a 10K. Remember how you prepare for a 10K and how hard you work then think that after you've done 20 miles you have a full 10K staring you in the face. I know I went through that logic in my first marathon; the exhilarartion of finishing 20 miles then realizing I've still got almost an hour left to go -- bummer.

Still doesn't excuse someone from cheating.

You could look at my splits from my first marathon to know that the last 6.2 is waaaaaaaaaaaay different from the first 20 miles. First 20 miles - sub 3 hour pace. Last 10K - not so much. At all.
