How lucky is Tech with Chris Beard

When Mack Brown retired from Texas, I thought for sure they were going to hire to Nick Saban for the simple reason he probably could have named his price and Texas would have happily obliged. But for whatever reason, it just didn't happen.

I wonder if the B12 wasn't quite "lenient" enough for his coaching and recruiting style. He is a great coach but I don't think the SEC has quite the standards the B12 has. Just a guess on my part.

When blazing hot, that can happen. ISU shot 58% from three in Manhattan.

Ku will be back, probably Monday night. TxT is very good though. It gets way better when hitting everything like pitching into the ocean.
1. Make thread about Tech being fortunate to have Beard there because of his family and the possibility of retaining him.
2. Surly talks about ISU shooting well from 3 at KState.

Marshall, Beard, Mark Pugh(Spelling) at Gonzaga, all are coaches that could leave but have seem to have found a place where they are really content at. Sometimes every last dollar isn't worth chasing especially if you are making pretty good coin like all these coaches are.

Not sure how you can include Beard as a coach that has 'found a place' when he's only in his third year at a school. If a big school came calling he's gone. I still think UCLA would be stupid to not go after him and if not him, if Shaka gets the boot, Beard is a UT grad. Not one coach has stayed at Tech all that long in their entire history. They've had five coaches since 2008.

Beard has done an outstanding job. Tech is probably easily the toughest place in the Big 12 to recruit to.

He is very good. I will point out that we did win in Lubbock. We also beat Texas Tech last year at home when we were very bad and Tech was very good. I will also point out that Beard lost 3 Big 12 games in a row earlier in the season.

But as everyone knows, Prohm is garbage and should be fired.

How is he doing in year 3 at tech vs year 4 of Prohm at ISU? Especially where the programs were at when they took over?

I’m sure Beard will probably hit the transfer market pretty hard this offseason. With 4 out of 5 starters gone (assume Culver goes pro) they’ll have to replace a bunch.

He was able to do that this year with some transfers.

I’m sorry but this made me laugh. Do you really not know his name is Mark Few?

At some point doesnt Gregg Marshall need to jump ship too? I know he's also paid well like Beard.

He has the easiest job in the world almost 4 mil, and job security.

He got Wichita State out of a mediocre one bid league. He loves it there.

This. Every team in the nation looks great when they shoot out of their minds. Their bench players even went 7-9 from three. That was like watching the FF game vs. Nova last year; everything went in. Bad day to have a bad day. On to the next one.

Beard is an excellent coach and is doing a great job in Lubbock. I get that he has family ties in the area but it would be foolish to think this is his last stop. He isn't going to have many more local high school kids that end up being Jarrett Culver. The lure of more money and easier recruiting will call and he will have to leave to further his opportunities if he proves that he can continually coach at this level. If he keeps it up, one of the Big Boy programs will come calling when they have an opening.

Marshall's drunken mess of a wife will close a few doors. I think he missed his window to jump ship and may be stuck there until he strikes gold on a few low ranked recruits and has a roster full of seniors and magically looks like a great coach again.

His alma mater, Texas, is the obvious next job if he leaves. Shaka is the worst coach in the conference and UT grad Beard the best youngster it seems.

It's the obvious move but I think in a few years there will be better jobs available to Beard.

Beard was an assistant coach at Tech for 10 years under Bobby Knight and Pat Knight. He knows and loves the college town atmosphere of Lubbock. After Tubby left Tech, our AD immediately called Beard, who had just accepted the UNLV job, and asked Beard if they could meet the following day to discuss him taking the Tech job. During that conversation Beard asked our AD, "Can we discuss it tonight?" So our AD flew to Las Vegas that afternoon and Beard took the job without a firm salary commitment. That said, Beard is paid very well, and with the current oil and gas BOOM in the Permian Basin, Tech alumni are feeling very, very flush. No school will money-whip Tech. Not even UT.

Best part about Beard is that he knows how to connect with Tech fans, especially the students. He does a tongue-in-cheek fireside chat show (almost) every week featuring a Tech player. He has also done a few fireside chats live at Chimeys where he takes student questions, autographs weird things, etc. This week's episode features Tariq Owens. It's definitely not the best episode but Tech fans and students eat this stuff up!

Obviously coaches make surprise job changes but Beard seems really happy in Lubbock and his statements about the Tech job sound very similar to Gary Patterson at TCU, so I don't see him leaving anytime soon. But if he does leave, it will be because he put Tech on the national basketball map and I'm cool with that. Cheers Clones!

I like this part. Timing was not great but at least Beard recognized if he was going to bail on UNLV after accepting the job he needed to do it quickly so that he burned that bridge with an acetylene torch rather than a flame thrower.

I can't help but like the guy. Saturday he was very clearly telling his guys "No shots; NO SHOTS!!!" when they had the ball to end the game with quite a bit of time on the clock but the shot clock off. He didn't want an episode like he had a couple of games before. It's hard to hate a guy when he is classy while he is whipping your ass.

I disagree. While there may likely be better basketball programs that come calling, I don't know how you can turn down a job at your alma mater where they have the deepest pockets in the nation and have lesser basketball expectations.

He could be content to stay put for awhile if it's what's best for his family, but only he knows what he wants to accomplish in his career.

Regardless, he's always seemed like a class act and is pretty easy to root for when they aren't playing ISU.
