Hilton Magic is just that...Magic

I agree that it has been a while since Hilton Magic was alive and well. I have been reading all these posts about how to bring it back, whose fault it is that it is gone and whether it's the fans' responsiblity or the team's to initiate it.

I was young during the period of time that the Magic was first recognized. I was still young but at the very impressionable age of 10 (or so) when the likes of Fred, Julius, Loren, Jacy (loved that guy) played and I remember the way the crowd fed off the team and team fed off the crowd. There was something special there. Something that is IMO impossible to describe or replicate. I don't believe Hilton Magic can be forced back to reality.

I just feel that the Magic we all long for will not be restored by the "fogies" standing up, CA being amended, relocated or disbanded. I don't believe the players can flap their arms to pump the crowd up enough or that the fans can shower the players with enough adoration to conjure up the Magic. And I honestly don't think Hilton Magic can be defined or that it's advantages can be quantified. I believe it's something that is what it's name suggests...Magical.

I feel as though the program will be back in the near future to where we as fans want it. I believe Fred is the man for the job and that the Magic will return in his tenure. When the Magic returns we will all look at each other say huh, when did that happen. I think it's like many things that have happened in my life. I was so busy trying to "figure it out". Then, when I was just going about my business and not expecting to "find the answer"...POOF, there it was.

I am interested in seeing what others think about this...

It's a mindset and it cannot be manufactured. It will only manifest itself over time. When a team walks into your gym knowing they aren't going to win, they are going to be proven right most of the time. The flip side of this coin is that your team can have the confidence they need in any situation, up ten or down fifteen, that they will prevail on that floor.

That's what Hilton magic always was about.

We know it exists, and it is only ever one or two key wins away in that building from making a come back.

Last night was one missed opportunity.

Well said...I think the best we can do as fans to "bring it back" is to go and do our part. Whatever each of us may think that is. If one guy thinks that is to give money to the program and go to the games and cheer only after good plays then he should do that. If another guy thinks that it's going to the games and standing/screaming for the entire game then he should do that. I think we all agree that the fans can have an impact and the biggest impact I believe is that we show up and root for our Cyclones. When the place is full it can't help but be loud. When the players look around and see a full place it is undeniable that it will give them a boost. Aside from that, reconfigurating seats or coming up with a new and clever chant will not be the difference between Magic and no Magic. IMO

Wins, as you say...and quality wins is what the team can do. They will have their opportunities this year and hopefully they can take advantage of them!

Hilton magic is not sober students all wearing the same T-shirt.
Hilton magic is buzzed students wearing homemade t-shirts.

Hilton magic is not yelling Oooohhhhhhh and waving your arms during a free throw.
Hilton magic is waving dollar bills and yelling show me the money to Lester Earl.

Hilton magic is not applauding a Ames alum for dropping 30+ points on the Clones.
Hilton magic is John Neal draining 3's fresh off the bench.

Hilton magic is not spinning bat race or lay-up races for crap prizes.
Hilton magic is shooting 5 for 5 for a chance to drive a Buick from Benson Motors.

Hilton magic is not company x smile cam, company y kiss cam, and the band playing scripted songs during timeouts.
Hilton magic is the fight song, Jump Around, and other songs keeping the energy in the building during timeouts.

Hilton magic in not chanting Cyclone or Power.
Hilton magic is singing "We're going to beat the **** out of you, and you and you and you and you."

Hilton magic is not hoping to comeback from 5 down with 2 minutes left.
Hilton magic is expecting to comeback from 10 down with 2 minutes left.

Hilton magic is not leaving with time remaining in the game.
Hilton magic is still celebrating 10 minutes after the game is over.

Hilton magic is not having a conversation with the guy sitting next to you.
Hilton magic is not being able to hear the guy next to you.

but most of all
Hilton magic is not having to talk with your girlfriend on the way home (Sorry Mycology)
Hilton magic is not being able to talk until the next home game.

You are spot on. It is a magical combination of unquantifiable things. If it could be "wished" back or "conjured" up, then anyone in any place could bring magic to their basketball facility. It can't be done. Only Hilton can have the magic.

I particularly like the bold portion above. Actually, the magic is still there, it just hasn't manifested itself again. As you say, if everyone goes about their business (fans, players, coaches, media, etc) then the magic will manifest again. Once a crowd experiences the magic it will grow and "POOF" there it was.

During the game a person experiences the craziness of the atmosphere-afterward the person looks back and says, "aha, that was the magic!".

Excellent post and very insightful. I like how you likened the magic to your own experiences in life. You have gained wisdom that will serve you well.
