This summer, Wide Right & Natty Lite is hosting their first ever Actually Helping Farmers Charity Golf Outing to raise money to donate to Practical Farmers of Iowa. The outing will be on July 20th at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames. Cost is $85 per person ($340/team), and will cover green fees, cart, and a meal provided by Hickory Park.

More information and registration is here.

Boy. This takes me back to the very first HUCAC golf outing. Don't remember too much other than getting pinned into a port-a-potty by a golf cart. Footage of me escaping said port-a-potty:

The thing about golf charity events that I've never understood is golf is a very stressful and uneasy game to play if you're not very good. Partnering with people you don't know to do something you're not self-confident in doesn't happen for most people.

People who never bowl join charity bowling events. People who don't play kickball join charity kickball teams. What is it about golf that keeps casual people away for the most part?

My first thought is cost? Although looking at the link, this is a pretty reasonably priced outing. I know around here in the Chicago Burbs, most charity outings run in the $800 - $2000 range for a foursome. That's a lot of money for something you don't particularly enjoy.

On the other side, I know a bowling charity event I did over the winter, was $45, that included pizza and beer/wine. So even if $85 is relatively cheap for a golf outing. It's still a price the non-golfer probably isn't willing to pay.

Also, to participate in a golf out one typically needs golf clubs. A bowling event, bowling alleys have lot's of balls that can be used.

PFI does some great work. They are a big reason why you are starting to see cover crops in the state. Glad to see them get this outreach partnership.

This is exactly what we were going for. We wanted to raise enough money to make a solid contribution to Practical Farmers, while still keeping it reasonable enough to not dissuade casual golfers from showing up and having a good time.
