We have no debts, have 150k < for down payment and make 200k< a year, I'm sorry I offended so many of you. I guess it's worth ~200k by your numbers?

I would get an agent, preferably one with some sort of buyer's agent certification. Get recommendations, meet with them and then ask them for former clients you can talk to.

By those numbers then you should be fine buying a house like that. Just make sure you hire an agent that knows the Ames market well, as they will know if the house is truly worth that

LOL - I live in San Francisco. Condos go for $1,000-$1,500/SQFT. More like, when did Ames become Minneapolis.

I thought the same thing. A $400,000 here in Denver would be the equivalent to a $170,000 house in Iowa. Can't imagine houses in San Francisco...

Just put an offer in on this place as a first time home buyer, wish me luck! Will still take advice like the OP

http://charterhouseiowa.com/listings/504907

what advice do you need? Don't let those manic, crazy, desperate realtors push you around. They create drama when there isn't any--because they want to give the illusion that they're earning their 3.5% or 7% commission. 75% of them are a pain in the arse

The internet has changed the industry drastically. 85% of the people find their own home on Zillow, Trulia, etc....then call a realtor to open up the house. They do very little, but work up a purchase agreement full of errors and typos

Their services have diminished. Yet they still get a hefty commission. LOL
