I have been looking for a HD video capture device such as a Hauppauge or Elgato. Does anyone have any experience with one of these devices or a suggestion for something else? Can these be used with a source other than a game console?

I have the Hauppauge HD PVR and would recommend it. I've used it to record old family events from VHS to digital. Works great. The included software is decent enough. I have their built-in TV tuner in my desktop to record TV directly to my PC otherwise I believe the HD PVR can also do that.
Hauppauge is a solid brand with good product line for this.
I use the Hauppauge HD PVR 2. Records in 1080p
Takes input for HDMI or Component video. I use the component cables to record off of my cable box to avoid the HDMI digital rights block. You do need a computer to run the software and store the recorded video.
