It's a good move on Stoll's part. He changed his legacy from being the dumbass that somehow got shot doing early morning stupid human tricks to being the guy that saved the ISU dual.

They can throw around all the Willis Reed parallels they want but it's obvious they were wrestling Stoll if the meet was at all in doubt. As long as they weren't jeopardizing his long term health, it only makes sense. Now, if that was in question....
