Has anyone purchased a new vehicle lately, the prices are off the wall.

So my wife and I are going to be looking at buying a vehicle. For those of you who have purchased recently, are there any advantages or disadvantages to getting a plug in hybrid vehicle? We aren't ready yet to do a full electric.
Advantage is for short trips you can use electric only. Disadvantage is the extra weight of the battery when you’re going ice only. Can usually get a rebate too with the plugin. Really depends on usage.

Both have good mechanic records, but I would never pay over list or wait up to three years for one.
The price and wait times are unique to everything that’s gone in the past few years, not their reputations.

It all comes down to supply and demand, for some vehicles right now the demand is greatly outpacing supply. For Toyota that would be the Sierras, Grand Highlanders and Sennia vans or most hybrids. If a dealer has one, most are not going under MSRP, because they understand that if you are unwilling to pay for it, somebody else will.

As to the wait time, it totally depends on what exactly you want in the vehicle. If you want a unicorn, then its either going to take time, or you are going to have to go out and find it. Those vehicles are out there, but generally dealers are not going to bust their ass to find them for you, you have to do that on your own. Which is what we did, we wanted a certain vehicle, certain color or two with a specific color interior offered in the vehicle. I kept looking until I found the exact vehicle I wanted, and the dealership and I could agree on a price.

Both Toyota and Honda make a hell of a vehicle anymore, better than the big 3 in many cases, and many are built right here in the US. They also hold their value and last forever.

My Grand Highlander was built in Indiana, they make Lexas in the Carolina's and Honda makes a lot of vehicles in Georgia I believe or Mississippi.
Honda has made cars in Ohio for really long time. Of course if you want the most American made vehicle, you buy a Tesla.

Cars.com also broke down the automakers with the largest share of U.S. light-duty sales from domestic assembly:

  • Tesla: 100%
  • Ford: 77.5%
  • Honda: 73.1%
  • Stellantis: 70.1%
  • Subaru: 58.5%
  • GM: 54.0%
  • Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance: 49.1%
  • Toyota: 48.9%
  • Mercedes-Benz: 41.5%
  • Hyundai: 40.2%
  • BMW: 36.3%
  • Volkswagen: 21.1%
  • Mazda: 14.7%
  • Geely: 4.0%

So what makes a car American-made? By Cars.com’s standards, it’s a mixture of five ingredients: country of origin for available transmissions and engines, U.S. manufacturing workforce, final assembly location and percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts. Their rules, not ours. But with that in mind, the top 10 American-made cars for 2023 are as follows, with "cars" being used as a generic term of light-passenger vehicles, including trucks, SUVs and literal cars:

  1. Tesla Model Y
  2. Tesla Model 3
  3. Tesla Model X
  4. Tesla Model S
  5. Honda Passport
  6. Volkswagen ID.4
  7. Honda Odyssey
  8. Acura MDX
  9. Honda Ridgeline
  10. Acura RDX

A little follow up to the tax question that some were wondering about. I purchased the new vehicle in S. Carolina on Sept. 25, and paid SC sales tax. When I went to the court house they told me that they had spoken to the people at the dealership and wanted some information that they sent down to SC. I phoned our courthouse on Monday, and they said they had received nothing back and told me to call back today.
I just got off the phone with the courthouse, no they had not received the check from SC, and I could not register the vehicle in Iowa, even though the state had already sent me the license plates and they are on the vehicle.
So, I called the dealership in SC, they had sent the packet with the check, certified mail, and it was signed for at the courthouse on Sept. 29th. So I called back up to the courthouse and guess what, they had received that check from SC. Just total incompetence had the check for a week, and no one had opened the envelope to see what was in it. Long story short, taxes are paid, state of Iowa and Davis Co got their money. I just need to stop by the courthouse and pick up my registration papers.

Had something kind of like that with the title lien. Somehow it didn't get removed and the bank had been acquired.

I had to make multiple calls to Iowa, figure out what entity could release the lien, and then actually have it performed.

The folks in Iowa were super nice. Not sure who dropped the ball, but it was a bit of work

Tesla will never get any of my money, regardless of where their cars are made.

Iowa has recently gone to electronic titles, and I have never seen more disorganization. Been an absolute nightmare. Madison county had my paperwork for 3 weeks before they finally got around to getting plates/paperwork. That was the excuse they gave me for the delay

The state sent me the license plates before I got the registration from the state, with my new tags on it, which will run out at the end of the year. I thought about not doing anything, but I figured with my luck I would get stopped and not have registration, they would write me up. Funny but they did not charge me any registration fee today when I went up to the courthouse, nor any fee for licensing the vehicle for the rest of the year. Now I might have paid those fees in S. Carolina and they were added to the tax, but the courthouse said nothing and I didn't volunteer the information.
