Yup on SportsCenter tonight. In their stupid 'Who's Now' bracket competition Stuart Scott mentioned that it could be the biggest upset of a #2 seed since... you know the rest.

Yeah, that kind of infamy comes with a big upset like that. I'm over it, more or less, but I still think I'll have to change the channel every time I see Hampton's coach being bear-hugged by his players like that....

What was the context? I take it some high-profile athlete got upset in that admittedly silly contrivance they have going on?

I'm sorry. If it's an 8 over a 1 or a 7 over a 2, then we should be spared of hearing this again and it should be deferred to NW LA ST's upset over Iowa.

Until another 15 drops a 2 or a 16 drops a 1...we will be referenced. Let's face it...we "crapped the bed" that game...no ands, ifs or buts.

I think of how good the team did to get a two seed, not how poorly they did to **** it down their legs.

At the time of that upset, I was a big time Cyclone fan managing an elevator in the town Hampton with quite a few Hawk fans working for me and as customers. Needless to say, it took quite some time before the little jabs began to subside and the comments like "the Cyclones couldn't even beat Hampton" referring to the towns high school team.

And I agree tha we deserve all the negative publicity we are getting..

You know, ever since last March I haven't heard too much about Hampton from Sqwak fans, and I don't even really bring up NW LA ST...

Our team was nothing more than average by the time we got to the tourny. We were never the same after getting spanked by Texas that season.

Yep, they overachieved all season and burnt themselves out trying to win the regular season conference and the quest for the NCAA #1 seed. I'm not saying they should have had lower expectations, but in a 20/20 hindsight thing they bought into the media hype about them being better than they really were and burnt themselves out trying to reach that expectation. I think if they had toned back just a bit and had received a #3 seed, they would have gone much further. But the way they were playing at the end of the year, maybe it's a blessing we didn't get the #1 seed. They were so "out" that we possibly could have been the first #1 to go down to a 16.

What excuse making this is. If they were so "burnt" then the fault would clearly lay at the doorstep of the head coach. The bottom line is there is no way this game should have been lost.

One of the top three most painful moments as a Cyclone (and sadly there are more occasions to choose from than I like to think about). Our first trip to a New Years Day Bowl or a Final Four will erase all of that!!!!

I dunno, I was not all that upset. I was in shock for a while, but I never did expect that team to go far. It seems at that point in the season they were just mailing it in expecting a win.

I'm glad you were the manager. Were the Squak fans working for you the ones that would push the buttons to bring customer's to their floor? Did they have to announce what was on each floor when they arrived or did you handle those responsibilities?

4th floor. Consumer electronics, household goods, ladies lingerie. Hello Mr. Tube. Going...down?

If they overacheived all season long, well good for them. I'd rather have the football team go 9-2 and then lose in a bowl game, then go 5-6 and not go to a bowl. Just like this in basketball. I would rather over acheive and have a number 2 seed and get national recognition all year long, than to under acheive get a mediocore seed and even make it to the sweet sixteen. If we play that game 9 more times, we would have won all 9. They lost, stuff happens, let it go.

I assume you are joking but did not see any smiley faces or anything to indicate so. Where do you store and sell your harvested grain crops?:biggrin9gp:

Sorry - I thought the Aerosmith reference would be enough to show I was joking!

Big difference between football and basketball. A well rested, talented #3 seed has a better chance of making a Final Four run than an absolutely drained #1 seed (or, in our case, an absolutely drained #2 seed). I am convinced had we somehow earned that #1 seed we very well could have been the first one to be beaten by a #16. How would that have looked for our legacy? We would have never lived that down. As it is, we can't live down losing as a #2. Am I saying we should have packed it? No. But it was obvious during and after the Texas game the team was running on fumes, and by the time we hit the Big XII tourney it was on empty. I think we could have at least opened up the bench some and rest the big names - by the end of the year I only remember us playing Tinsley, Horton, Nurse, Shirley, Sullivan, Haluska, and Power. These guys were dead by the end of the year. Maybe it would have cost us a win or two and a seed, but we would have been in much better shape rest-wise come tourney time.
