So I'm sitting in this bar and this rather large dude comes in and sits right beside me. When I glance over I realize it's Leon F-inf Spinks-former HWT champ of the world. He lives in Omaha now. Cool dude.

Wow - what quirky coincidence. Wonder why he wants to live in Omaha?

Remember, he won a split dec vs Ali in '78 to gain the crown, then when Ali and Don King pressured him to fight again in less than a year, Ali beat him up and Spinks never had much of a career after that. He was a decent Hwt. Olympic Gold medal winner (and his brother too).

I keep bringing this up about Ali every time people argue he was one of the greatest boxers all time. No, all-time great fighters don't lose the title three times; entertaining, but not a record to compare with Louis and Marciano.

Louis ...yes.

Marciano? no. He fought nothing but stiffs and was lucky to keep the title against an elderly Archie Moore. IMO

Not a heavyweight, but IMO Sugar Ray was the best ever, pound for pound.

Interesting portrayal of Suger in Raging Bull

Never seen it, may have to check it out. Awhile back I saw a bio on espn classic about him. I was far too young when he was still fighting to remember, but man that man was quick.

He had a crapload of knockouts for his weight class.

Did he say if he still gets 50% off on Big Macs? Perrault tracked him down a couple of years ago for an interview on his old show on 590. The responses to questions were almost impossible to decipher - either too many beers or too many blows to the head. I hope that he has managed to rebound, but he was in bad shape a couple of years ago.

The big interview: Leon Spinks - Times Online

No way; he was undefeated as a fighter - I don't know of any other heavy weight who can say that; and just about every win was a knock out.

And I would not consider Jersey Joe and Archie Moore, "stiffs" - and he knocked out both of them. When you have as many knock outs as Marciano did, every one looks like a stiff.

Besides, my argument was more of a knock on Ali's record and how people are so enamored by his legacy when he lost the title 3 times.

both were past the prime when he fought them....and Archie had him on the ropes during that fight.

Ali is a legend due to the incredible fighters he faced (Foreman, Frazier) amongst others that dwarfs Marciano.

If you ever want to see him go to the Bearded Clam in Kimberling City, Mo just off Table Rock Lake. He's always there in the summer, and it isn't unusual to see him staggering down HWY 13 drunker than ten indians. He's really not all that big though, but is one of the nicer guys you'll meet.
