"She sits clad in pink Eeyore pajamas, flipping through channels from her hospital bed."

That line broke my heart.

if everybody stays healthy, and they stay on track, they could have seven generations alive at once, if grandma makes it to age 90...

I grew up in Muscatine, IA...right near D-Port and the QC area...My hs had a daycare in it...I will repeat that, WE HAVE A DAYCARE in our HS. Being from that area I must say there is something in the Mississippi water that makes people horny at a younger age. I know we had people come talk to us about safe sex and abstinence every week it seemed like because we had the highest teen pregnancy rating in the state. Def. something to be proud of...oh yeah, we had a lot of meth trouble too!

I had a woman who worked for me in C-R that was a 26 year old grandma. Grandma AND mom were preggers and gave birth at 13.

High school kids in the Fort Dodge area have made similar claims about the pregnancy rate being the highest. I'm sorry but there are some dumb teenagers out there, this isnt that hard of thing to prevent.

Your school ACTUALLY discussed abstinence? I swear the way the Davenport school district treated the issue they were required to mention it once during the school year, but then unconstitutional and politically incorrect to even mention it along with safe sex the rest of the year. Hasn't anyone learned that the attitude of "well, they're going to have sex anyway and we might as well show them the 'correct' way to have sex" hasn't worked over the last 20 years? Haven't we learned after 20 years that 12 year olds aren't emotionally or mentally ready enough nor mature enough to have sex and deal with the consequences of their actions (as if most 18 year olds are)? Seriously - how many 12 year olds would even have the idea of having sex if adults weren't "pushing" it on them (I know sex was barely crossing my mind, but it wasn't even a consideration until we got the "talk" in 5th grade...). But because of this "let's push safe sex instead of abstinence in the schools" attitude we've had over the last 20 years, who knows how effective an abstinence push even would be now. But one thing's clear - this "safe sex" thing that's being pushed in the schools certainly isn't working.

I agree with jdog. Both DARE and sex ed share a common thread. They both "promote" a negative activity, by raising awareness of it.

While DARE comes out and says something is bad, sex ed just promotes sexual activity and offers instruction on how to do it "right."

Of course, my conception (pun intended) of "right" is to start when you are financially and mentally ready to raise the child which could result from said activity.

Hell, I was 30 before I got married. I'm 35 now and still no kids. One day soon hopefully. I don't want to be so old that I can't do anything because I'm too tired.
