Also, for what it's worth, I live in the Twin Cities and know a coach that's very connected to the BB scene up here - AAU, HS, Timberwolves, etc. He told me a couple years ago that ISU was outbid for Rashad Vaughn. He put the $ at close to $200k. I have no idea if it's true. This is not a close friend, but I can only say that the coach has never told me anything else that is outlandish or that I questioned re: its veracity. It did bother me that ISU would be playing that game - maybe all are; I don't know. Again, take it for what it's worth.
I thought the story on Vaughn goes something like Vaughn called Hoiberg and said UNLV is offering me $250k, what can you do? And Hoiberg said they could do something simple like $40k or a car. Vaughn said okay you're out then and hung up.

That could be the $200k out-bid you're referring to.

NY's call everyone a rat when they leave their city, no surprise.

Here is the thing with Matt, he struck lightning in a bottle when he was at ISU. He was ahead of the curve from recruiting transfers and now dynamics have changed in college ball. He wasn't able to get the same kind of success going at SJ's and struggled to get the program going in the right direction. He was responsible for the following: Kane, Hogue, White, CA, KL, Babb, Booker, McKay. He was huge for ISU and a lot of people took shots at him for his recruiting style and his success. Dude is very loyal to Fred and vice versa.

Did he bring in any players besides transfers? Since that market has changed, I question how effective he would be as a recruiter.

I don't have the specifics. The coach I know said something to the effect that ISU had Vaughn headed its way for $150k or $175k (can't remember which) and that UNLV came in higher so got him. It's certainly possible that he knew of UNLV's offer and presumed what ISU had actually offered to have been in the lead. Again, I can't say that this is fact, just that it's what was shared with me by a coach who seemed very plausibly "in the know" about something like this, due to his connections, and had no apparent axe to grind.

That's my point. His job in the last 8-10 years is focused on the transfer market. Otz & Cornell went after the HS kids and did well.

He was all over Diallo. So I think he will be fine with doing what needs to be done on the recruiting trail

There were a lot of misses in there, especially early.

You have some all-timers in there, too, though.

i'm not putting every shady thing on matt - fred's no choir boy either. I got a kick out of his press conference story about the the inflight magazine highlighting nebraska etc. and how just just recently decided to take the job.

everyone in college bball knew fred to NU was a done deal many weeks ago lol.

At least Hines had nearly ... seven? eight? ... more sources than the average thing said on talk radio (sports-related or not) or cable news (again, sports-related or not).

:D

Player development is probably the last knock I would expect on Prohm. I mean look how much better Burton, Thomas and Nader got under him and then just this year with Shayok and Jacobson
Babb improved a ton his 3 years here too. Niang and Morris were already good players, but both took their games to another level after Prohm was here too. Not to mention Naz developing into a borderline NBA player. The guy also put two players into the NBA from Murray State.

Prohm's strengths seem to be evaluating high school talent, and player development.

I was responding to what he talks about in interviews. He doesn't hype up the potential of players in the media as much as I'd like. Especially freshman. He tells it like it is and doesn't "tell us what we want to hear" in regards to player development

Is there any positive whatsoever to hyping a player's potential?
