Good/Bad Advisers

I know that most of you had Faculty Advisers within your college, but since I changed majors...umm, a few times, I went through my share of advisers. One of my first was Amy Ness, wife of Jon Ness, but she left the University shortly thereafer. I had a succession of advisers who handed me over as they retired, but my last (and best) was my L.A.S. Adviser, Kathleen Timmons. Always patient with time to help and explain.

I know that some of you have horror stories, anyone else?

I don't recall ever having bad advisors, but I have had "hot" advisors. When I was in Industrial Technology, my advisor was pretty good lookin. I'm not sure if she is still there though. My current advisor in Kinesiology is not hot, but very nice and does a great job.

I knew someone whose advisor was either in the hospital or teaching abroad with ISU. Not very helpful...

Vicky Thorland-Oster - best advisor hands down, she should have gotten a medal when I graduated ... she was about the only one that thought it was possible.

My advisor quite literally does not know a single thing about any class that she doesn't teach. And she only teaches two classes... She is so profoundly unhelpful that most of her advisees have learned to never ask her for advice. If we make the mistake of doing so, we are treated to a condescending lecture about how we "are big boys and girls now, as adults at a university, and part of preparing for a professional career is learning how to make our own decisions." I want to hit her more often than not.

Never talked to my advisor during school; couldn't even tell you who it was.

Carol Cordell in Kinesiology--she rocks. She's the adviser I was assigned during freshman orientation and 2 years later she's helped me with a lot of stuff--changing majors, bad grades, study abroad planning, you name it she's done it. Kinda sad that I'll change advisers in a year or two (seniors see someone else) but the times I've worked with that adviser she's been great too.

Dana Schumacher - Political Science......she was the greatest. Although I did have a faculty adviser, I never spoke to them once. Dana was and is the best, in my opinion.

Carol was awesome. So is Cindy (the advisor you will have when you are a senior, assuming you are still in Kinesiology). She really knows her stuff and also very nice.

Jim Kliebenstein(sp) was the advisor that helped me the most back in my college days. I think he retired here in the last couple years. Very helpful. Just the fact that I remember him from my 86-91 years and couldn't tell you the names of the other advisors I had tells me something.

Melody is still there.....and still pretty good looking

I can't even tell you who my advisor was. I saw him once, during my Freshman orientation, and never saw him, again.

However, a couple professors did take me "in hand" and led me through some rougher spots. Thank you Doctors Wilt and Madison

I loved both Carol and Marsha. Had Carol my freshman year and she still helped me out my last four years (Yes, that adds up to five. Soar in Four sucks.) Marsha also did a lot for me too, both really good!

Way, way back in my day, I was an Industrial Administration (business) major, before it was even a college at ISU. Anyway, I decided I wanted to add a minor, economics. So I went to my advisor and said I wanted to add a minor in economics, and wondered, what did he think? He actually told me that the Industrial Administration major and an Econ minor did not really work well together. :wacko: I switched advisors that same day.
