Gary Wade, the announcer at men's basketball games for the last 42 years is retiring. I'm 41 and have been going to games since I can remember. I'm guessing I've been to at least a game in each of the last 37 years (and that streak was a big reason I wanted to get to a game or two this year). And his announcing has been the one consistent thing in all of those years. So many fun memories.

It will be different without him.

Going to be very different next year with new PA people in both football and basketball.

Karl Schloerke definitely went out on a high note...but at least Gary Wade had plenty of highlights of his own over the years.

Sad day for ISU hoops. He is a big part of Hilton Magic.

I think it would be awesome to get an announcer that has a very low voice- such as guy that announces for the Los Angeles Lakers or the guy that does Purdue Basketball.

This may be more true than many of us think. A good PA guy really helps with the atmosphere at any arena.

Sad for ISU Hoops, but happy for Gary to be able to free up a couple days a week for other things.

I agree 100%, when I think back to my memories of going to games as a student, and try to envision the crowd noise and the atmosphere, his voice is definitely part of that nostalgia hit. It’ll definitely feel weird going to my next game at Hilton with a different announcer.

no doubt. I have so many good memories at Hilton and his voice is wrapped up in all of them.

A buddy and I talked to him at the Cyclone Recruiting roundup, whatever it was where they introduced the new recruits a couple years ago. He had some great stories about Johnny, Huggs and other coaches. I would love to pick his brain again sometime.

Just the starting lineups in the 1980s: "A 6-5 forward from Flint Michigan, Jeffffff Graaaaayer....... And at guard, 6-3, from LeGrange, Illinois, Jeffffffff Hooooooooooornacek!!!!!!!!!!"

Those are the things that make an arena come to life. Gary Wade very likely was as much a part of Hilton Magic as Johnny Orr and/or any of us in the crowd all those years.

Sucks that he didn’t get to go out with a full crowd and a good team. It’s going to be weird having a new announcer when the restrictions lift and crowds are full again.

I think the biggest litmus test for a good PA announcer is the level of disinterest he can create in his voice when announcing the opposing starting lineup.

Ken Miller had him on his show today. It was a great interview. Toward the end Miller asks him if he would change his mind and Wade said no then went on about some health issues he has recently and wants to be done on his terms for his family before something health related does it for him.
