Who was your childhood hero? Did you have an affinity for Elvis or Hulk Hogan? Big Abe Lincoln fan? Who did you admire most as a kid?

I was all about sports as a kid. I'd watch all of it when it was on TV. Harmon Killebrew, Bart Starr, Jerry West, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson were at the top of my list.

As a tot, I loved me some Captain Kangaroo, but my fave was Bunny Rabbit since he always seemed to be pissed off about something and always got away with tantrums. I did not.

Lots and lots of iconic sports figures, though not one stands out specifically.

From the movies: Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones (always had a fascination with archaeology and that turbo charged it).

Literary characters: A lot from Lord of the Rings, but I think initially as a child, Bilbo and Frodo really struck a chord because they were small and frightened, but managed to do a lot of brave things.

Ryne Sandberg. Absolutely smooth infielder.

WGN was so awesome back then.

Summer afternoons in the 80s with nothing to do on a rainy day, watching the Cubs down 8 in the 5th inning, listening to a heavily buzzed Harry Carry (who was also down 8 - Budweisers) berate Steve Stone about his cigars, while the cameraman was zooming in on girls in tank tops in the crowd.

Good times! And I didn't even like the Cubs...

As far as heroes - clearly Luke Skywalker because I was that age. But also Spock, because he never lost his sh!t and was always saving the day because he was smarter than everyone. That was appealing to a smart awkward kid...

as far as sports, I suppose Kent Tekulve was the guy I imitated when playing ball as a kid. Even learned to throw sidearm. This also would check with awkward kid lol.

Reading through this thread, I'm now even more aware that women's sports were not easy to access when I was a child. Like, I knew it, but this is a harsh reminder. I'm glad times have changed a bit.

That said, I didn't have any real idols as a kid, but I remember singing along with Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. And in my early teen years, I really wanted to be on "MMC" or "Kids, Inc." despite having no musical ability. Ha ha ha.

Rod Carew was mine as a kid. When I got older I realized my real hero was my dad.

"Jo-deee, Jo-deee Davis, catcher extraordinaire"

Always fun when HC would bust out that one to the tune of the Davy Crockett song.

Cubs on channel 3 (WGN) and Braves on channel 4 (TBS) on the little black cable box sitting on top of our console TV is a vivid memory from my youth.
