Snapper's in Key Largo has the best alligator bites. I could have just had a couple plates of those instead of a main dish. I have no idea what they use for seasoning, but dang those things are the bomb!!

The Smoking Hereford in Storm Lake has some awesome cheese curds, best I've had in Iowa. Family Table always has good onion rings. The nacho plate at Brick City in Ames is pretty solid.

Finally got a chance to try that place that fall and I wish I lived closer to it or had a reason to go through Storm Lake more often as that place has awesome food! I got their burger that was voted best in Iowa in 2017 but I'd love to try a bunch of other things on that menu as man the place smelled good and everything that got delivered to our table looked awesome.

For me fried pickles and fried cheese curds or cheesballs are my favorite apps. The Italian Nachos at Old Chicago are pretty addicting too.

Fried pickles are WAY better as a spear than a chip. You can't convince me otherwise.

Also a big fan of curds with a vat of ranch to dip them in.

Tot-chos or waffle fry nachos are also A-plus in my book.

When I lived in DSM, we'd go to The Continental just for the truffle mushrooms.

If we aren't talking local fare, crab claws have got to be up there. Hard to beat the pickle thingies with cream cheese and dried beef also.

There was a restaurant in Berkeley called China Station; we used to meet there occasionally after work. Five or six of us; we'd each order a different appetizer (they were HUGE), and share them all. Kind of a DIY dim sum...and very filling.

Fried calamari. Petite strips, not the big fat chunky ones.

Fongs has these Chinese Cheesesticks that are really good. Kinda like a mozzarella stick, but with a wonton instead of the breading.

Their crab rangoons are really good too. More of an egg roll looking shape IIRC.

The mention of bruschetta reminded me. Probably the best overall appetizer I've ever had was at Vesta Dipping Grill in Denver. It's an entire restaurant designed around dipping sauces. I got their "Vesta Sauce Sampler," where you just get naan and five dipping sauces of your own choosing. We had our waiter pick the best five, and they were magical. I am a sucker for all things dippable, though.

Iowa Taproom poppers:

Shredded smoked chicken with jalapeño, pepper jack, cream cheese, Sriracha, breaded and fried to perfection. Perfect blend of spicy and creamy.

Best ever were the Conch Fritters with Mango/Pepper Dipping sauce at Panama Red's in Nashville, Tn. Sadly they closed down long ago.

I still make a trip every now and then to Bennigan's on Merle Hay just for the Broccoli Cheese Bites (with honey mustard dipping sauce) and the Southwest Eggrolls (with Pineapple Salsa).

Also am a big fan of Spinach Artichoke Dip with deep fried Pita Chips.

My BIL made these smoked oyster apps that go over pretty big with the family. A rosemary triscuit smeared with cream cheese, a smoked oyster, and a splash of tabasco. Ambrosia!

My mom makes little smokeys wrapped in bacon, sprinkled with brown sugar, then baked in the oven. They do not last very long.

I make killer pepper boats - halved and hollowed jalapenos, filled with a mixture of Hot Italian sausage and sour cream, and wrapped with bacon. The vixen puts them on the grill for a bit (so the bacon gets crispy), and then into the oven. On gameday the guys wolf these like no other. (Me, too).

Second place: My SIL's pickle wraps. Always a family get-together hit.
Texas version is jalapeno pepper split open and stuffed with cream cheese, smoked brisket and wrapped with bacon and put on the smoker. Finish with a glaze of bbq sauce.

No mention of spinach artichoke dip yet?! It's one of my favorites to try at places since there's such a variety of ways to make it and what to serve with it.

Another favorite is at Barrel House in the QC they make a jalapeno popper filling in fried wontons served with a sweet chili sauce that is amazing!

Baguette bread sliced thin and drizzled with EVO. Toasted and then add gorgonzola cheese crumbles and honey...

Tom Yum Soup from J’s Noodles. Hot but not Thai hot. Mmm.

Thai food is always hit or miss but when it’s good it’s so freaking good.
