Where can you live that there aren't thunderstorms?

Midwest thunderstorms are MUCH better than Spokane thunderstorms. We don't have the atmospherics although we DID have a confirmed F-0 tornado about 10 years ago. It was terrible - some garbage cans got knocked over and nobody out here has root cellars.

Thunderstorms in the Midwest are better than anywhere else. Laying in bed in IA during a thunderstorm with the windows open was awesome. And sleeping at night during a thunderstorm was the best sleep ever. Virginia and Georgia had t-storms, but the thunder was "tinny" and swallowed up by the trees so it wouldn't echo. Texas has them once every 6 years, but they're usually accompanied by an F5 tornado and wind damage. The poster is correct, IA Thunderstorms > Anyplace Else T-storms

Things I miss and or can't get in Ohio:

The night sky above my parents farm
Good pork tenderloins
bbq rub wings from Jethros
Bankets from Jaarsma bakery in Pella
Basketball games at Hilton
Tailgaiting at Jack Trice
dried beef
driving as fast as my car can go down a lonely country highway

Things I don't miss:

allergy attacks from all the dust/pollen
limited entertainment options/boredom
crap seafood

Family, Iowa State sporting events, real thunderstorms, modern facilities (everything seems old and out-dated in New England), ease of getting to around, low cost of living.

When I was out of state I missed everything being green in the summer, and yes H1 is the worst.

After his first year of school in California, son got a little choked up crossing the Missouri. Said he forgot how green everything was.

Although I am not far removed there is a very noticeable difference. "Iowa Nice" is real. I am reminded of the difference just going to a grocery store here vs there. My Illinois friends travel to Iowa for school or whatever and come back and comment about it. People in Iowa are very willing to help a stranger or just be friendly in general. As a small example a friend's daughter had a tire blow out on her way to move in at Drake. Out of the blue a service vehicle pulled over on I-80 changed the tire and when asked how much said "no thanks, didn't take long". The mom that told me the story said wow all that crap you've been telling me about Iowa is true! It's a small thing but driving through Iowa you get the steering wheel wave. Wife asks if I know that guy. I say no it's just Iowa. I keep telling people when home that Iowans don't know how good they have it. Except for the speed cams In CR! Definitely not Iowa like.

Oh and Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches!

Living on the west side of the Cascade Mountains, you guys don't know what "green in the summer" is. I remember not having to mow in Iowa after early August cause all the grass was brown. Out here I have to mow from late February to November.

We finally found a place to get decent sweet corn too, so that's been nice.

Midwest thunderstorms are a very unique thing, and we all miss that.

Casey's breakfast pizza - love that stuff so much.

The people out here aren't any less nice than Iowans in my experience. All 7 years that we lived in Gladbrook, we were "the new people" and were never really embraced as part of the community. And I coached the junior high football team for 6 of those years so it's not like we weren't trying. As long as you have one of the 3-4 last names that everyone in the small town has, you get "Iowa nice."

Outside of seeing family and going to ISU sporting events, there isn't much that I miss about Iowa.

Houston has plenty of thunderstorms. But the weather after the storm is even more humid after them.

I miss the low humidity levels, fall, and lack of traffic.

I left Iowa 10 years ago and honestly don't miss anything. I guess I kind of miss HyVee grocery stores, but since I'm currently in NW Arkansas any store that is not WalMart is a welcome sight.

Thunderstorms are special in Iowa. I had a classmate live through a hurricane in Florida and thought it was nothing...nothing compared to an Iowa thunderstorm.

I also miss the pork tenderloins, good beef in the grocery stores, sweet corn and tomatoes, slower pace, nicer people, and more personal responsibility.
