Yeah, this is incredible that there’s a population of Boone cheering for the defeat of this referendum. The toxic attitudes of small town America will continue to doom them into oblivion.
The biggest issue was there was essentially no plan for maintaining the building, and people were afraid the income would be insufficient to pay the debt. The same thing happened to the YMCA: people paid according to a sliding scale, and income declined.

Cedar Rapids had a similar issue when they built the new library downtown. The people in charge just loaded it up with stuff like it was Christmas and then to no surprise, it was losing more money than budgeted. So they went back to the voters asking for more money. When it was voted down, they publicly criticized residents. Just an appalling lack of awareness.

I'm probably biased because I worked in some of the top Hy-Vees in the company in the late 80s/early 90's.

If you were from outside of the state of Iowa you'd think that Hy-Vee has completely killed Fareway over the last 30 years. Hy-Vee has had huge growth, better known throughout the Midwest, huge sponsorships, etc.

For me the complete opposite has happened. I use to have pride that I worked for Hy-Vee, which had some of the best customer service in the retail world. Hy-Vee in price comparisons was always a little more expensive than other grocery stores but if you stayed in the grocery aisles(stay away from non-foods), they were decently competitive. Besides the meat department, Fareway was crap and would only be busy in places where there was no Hy-Vee. I don't think Hy-Vee even considered them as a competitor. The woman were forced to wear dresses. Things in general were just ass backwards. Since then, everything has completely flipped. Hy-Vee's prices are ungodly expensive and the shopping experience really isn't that impressive any longer. Their customer service sucks. Everyone in the DSM area knows how bad they treated their corporate IT. Their management model has completely changed for the worse. Things like Wahlburgers was such a dumb stunt. Still can't get their delivery service to make money or be good. On top of all of this, they are expanding into markets where they'll have true competition.
Meanwhile, Fareway just keep chugging along and getting better each year. Yes, they are slower than I'd like to see on some things but at least they are improving.
Back in the 90's, I worked in Indianola with the current CEO of Hy-Vee and hopefully he has the plans in place to get back to the basics.

Fareway seems slower to expand, but they also haven't had the mistakes that HyVee seems to have. I was also excited that my small hometown got a Fareway a year or two ago when their local grocery store burned down. It is not a full blown Fareway, but has a lot of items and provides an option to people other than going farther away or going to Caseys.

Thanks for the explainer, that does make more sense…

Fareway buys two eastern Iowa stores. Makes you wonder how Brothers ended up in Lisbon and Denver.

Denver's original grocery store went out of business, so there was a need for a grocery store. And Brothers opened up. The DeVries family was probably familiar with it since Denver and AP are in the same conference.

Hopefully Denver supports Fareway, Brothers kind of struggled. But Fareway has more experience in the small towns. And a HyVee in north Waterloo closed last year.

Denver and Lisbon are approx. 80 miles apart. That is what puzzles me. They are not close to each other.

I assume Brothers was looking for towns without grocery stores and that kind of dictated their moves. They kind of had the mission to be in communities that needed them.

My hometown has a Brothers Market. It's nice, and needed here. But people are worried if they are shedding some of their stores. They didn't have many to begin with. What that means in the longer term is uncertain.

I had never heard of Brothers and never researched them. I assumed Denver and Lisbon were their only locations. My bad.

I think they still have 5 or 6 locations in eastern Iowa small towns.

When they built the one in Lisbon I questioned the wisdom. There is Gary's market about a mile away in Mt. Vernon. I rarely saw many vehicles in the lot and when I did effort to stop there I found it pretty "meh."

I don't live in that area anymore but would expect a Fareway to be more successful than the Brothers market was.
