I am finally getting around to scheduling an eye exam for the first time in Ames, and I'm looking for advice on where to go. I checked my insurance plan, and the options I have include the following:

DR TODD SCHULZ (223 WELCH AVE)
VOGUE VISION CENTER (2526 LINCOLN WAY)
HY-VEE VISION CENTER (3800 W LINCOLN WAY)
WAL-MART (534 S DUFF AVE)

Anyone have good or bad experiences at any of these locations? I don't have any special vision needs at this time, just need to get a routine exam so I can get an updated prescription for some new glasses.

If nothing else, who has the best magazines in the waiting area?

Dr. Koenig at HY-VEE VISION CENTER (3800 W LINCOLN WAY) is a good one AND he's a cyclone fan! I have a very tricky set of eyes to deal with and he's got my contacts very finely tuned, while others have struggled to do so.

Isn't he at McFarland? Or different guy?

Carrie Koenig is at McFarland on Duff, at least, that's the Koenig that always examines my eyes.
Yeah she's at the Duff one, but I've gone to Daniel Koenig at the West Ames location, but it was about a year ago.

I have had great luck with Vision 4 Less in Ankeny. I know its not in Ames but they are good and cheap. I think my last exam with tax was $59.

Still showing up on McFarland's website:
McFarland Clinic PC - Provider Profile

I haven't gone to him for my appt. this year but I've been one of his first customers since he came to town in fall 2000 and haven't ever thought about switching to a different optometrist. He's a really, really, good guy.
I've not only gone for glasses and contact fittings but I've had a couple weird eye infections brought on by work probably and he treated it ASAP. He even gave me his cell number to call him over the weekend if it flared up.

Hi AdamO ... I'm the optometrist at Eye-Mart Optical in Ames. FYI ... Vogue Vision is now a part of Eye-Mart Optical. Dr. Koenig is a great doctor, and a Cyclone, but as far as I know, he's no longer at Hy-Vee.

At Eye-Mart, we perform comprehensive eye health and vision exams, specializing in the prevention of eye disease. We provide a high level of service while keeping our overhead and costs down. My staff and I work hard to help our patients see great and look awesome. Oh, and we wear the cardinal and gold for our Saturday appointments!

If we can be of any help, call 598-5111 to set up an appointment. We'll take great care of you.
