"ESPN returned dozens of Emmy statues and “disciplined” employees after an investigation disclosed Thursday found that the sports network had submitted fake names to the awards organization in a bid to secure trophies for on-air personalities who had been ineligible to receive them.

The apparent fraud stretched back to 1997, ESPN said in a statement, acknowledging that members of its team “were clearly wrong” for concocting the scheme."

Oh, guess what...

"Ownership of ABC, and thus control of ESPN, was acquired by Capital Cities Communications in 1985. ESPN's parent company renamed themselves as Capital Cities/ABC Inc. Capital Cities/ABC Inc. was then acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 1996 and was re-branded as Walt Disney Television."

Lol. That's pretty amusing. I wonder what some of the fake names they submitted were. Could have had some fun with that

Saw this earlier today and kind of meh once you get past the headline

The shows won the awards, this was just ESPN getting extra trophies.
The best part is that they had someone take off the fake name and re-engrave the real person’s name before they gave it to them.

Definitely no way for ESPN to say they didn’t know what they were doing

So basically, if Sports Center won an emmy for production they put in fake names so they could give a trophy to someone like Dan Patrick because he technically shouldn't have been eligible for a trophy because he wasnt part of the production team. Yeah, that's not a big deal at all. Why did they bother self reporting this. Just stop doing it and move on.

I think the rationale of the ESPN employees that did this is he WAS part of the production team, but Emmy rules (at the time) didn't allow the on-air talent to be submitted as producers so he can't get an Emmy that he really deserves. Those rules have apparently changed in the past couple years.

So they vacated the title but everyone will still think they won X number of emmys. No different than sports. Color me not shocked.
