Thinking about a smoke for a Christmas gift. Would appreciate any recommendations. Also electric vs propane.

Won't be doing a lot of smoking since our family is rather small.

Got a turkey on my traeger right now. Go pellet. Even if you think you won't do much smoking, you can use a pellet grill for other things. Hell, in the summer, I use it as an oven so I don't heat the house up.

TThis thread is interesting. I've been wanting a smoker but never considered electric...seemed like cheating and questioned results you'd get. This discussion has me reconsidering. Would be interesting to know if you electric proponents grill using gas or charcoal when you grill.

I have a separate Weber charcoal grill. I wouldn't mind getting a pellet grill but if I was going to get one I wouldn't buy a pos so I would end up spending 1,500, which would be a waste for the amount of grilling/smoking that I do.

I also agree to go pellet. Green Mountain Grills or Traegers - both spendy but both awesome , my vote is Green Mountain

I'm wanting something simple. Thinking pellet it more money and time than what I want to put into it.

Bought an electric Cajun Injector last winter. Love it and wished I had done it years ago. Tons of good tips and recipes on the internet.

I have a 15-20 year old Traeger and a Weber smokey mountain. The really nice thing about the Traeger is the range of temps 150 to 400 and it can hold it within 5 degrees easily.
Really, as long as you put in some pellets, you can basically forget about it and go about your day, so that is really nice.

We buy a lot of our supplies for it from Arnold Motor and they have sales around Black Friday.

Pellets are pellets. I work in the partical reduction and densification industry. (hammermills and pelletmills) Good looking uniform pellets is what you want. I dont have any customers making cheap pellets, I dont know how you would do it unless labeling isn't regulated in that industry.

I grill using both. Depends if you're going for fast and easy or not. I don't know why electric bbq would be cheating. If the option is electric or nothing, wouldn't you rather have somthing that most people wouldn't know the difference?

And I get that...I was there. I had a propane smoker that I spent $100 or so on, and then bought the trager later, ended up giving the propane one to my dad. In the end, I would have spent less money just getting the pellet grill up front.

Could anyone with Green Mountain provide me with information on how they work for just grilling steaks, burgers, chicken?

Thanks!
