Biggest question is which carrier are you on - Verizon or AT&T?

We're now using T-Mobile. That's a good question: we are open to switch to either Verizon or AT&T. We will not consider sprint, because I will jsut use my "non-smart" phone and Sprint requires both phones to be on data plan (instead of just one).

Droid has a lot going for it, but they are pretty comparable, hardware and feature-wise. Biggest knock against the iPhone is AT&T and the inability to run simultaneous apps (can't listen to music while surfing web***, etc.).

****Edit: Can't stream music via Pandora or Slacker--sorry for the confusion.

I love my Iphone 3GS. Just love it. But I get good coverage in KC area though... I know AT&T has crappy coverage in some area. I hated Verizon when I was with them because how their data plans and stuff were set up.

The example you cite is completely false. The iPhone allows certain functions to run in the background and the iPod functionality is one of them.

Outside of that, for the most part the statement is true, the iPhone runs mostly one application at a time. Saves on battery life but can cause delays on time sensitive apps.

If you are on T-mobile now and don't notice any problems, you're probably fine with either VZW or ATT.

Sprint's data plans are cheaper than AT&T's non data plans, especially if you have multiple lines.

I prefer the Droid/Droid Incredible (depending if you want a physical kb or not) over the iphone, but it's a lot of personal preference. Android has more free apps, but iPhone has more "mainstream" ones available currently.

Only the third party apps cannot be going simultaneously (i.e. Pandora). This problem should be resolved by June or so when new OS 4.0 comes out.

Isn't thew new iPhone OS this summer supposedly going to allow concurrent apps?

I thought I read that here not too long ago.

I have an iPhone - love it. Coverage outside DSM is the biggest issue. Depends how much you'll be out of your main area I suppose.

To clarify, I was referring to listening to Pandora or Slacker streaming, but w/ it being an iPod as well I wasn't very clear (at all). I stream music all of the time while doing other things on my Blackberry (as does my wife on her Droid), so this is a big deal to me. Sorry for the confusion.

Even so, isn't Sprint still cheaper? Wait until Summer and get the EVO...*drool*

You may want to take a second look at that with Sprint. I just popped over to their website and you can get 1500 shared minutes, unlimited mobile to mobile to all carriers and unlimited nights starting at 7, unlimited texts, and unlimited data on 2 phones for a total of $129 on Sprint. That can be two smart phones, two dumb phones, or one of each. If you are going to buy an iPhone plan and a separate plan for yourself, I would be pretty certain you are going to hit $129 or more on your bill. In my experience, Sprint tends to give you the most bang for the buck when you dig into the details.

As others have mentioned, however, I think a key piece of info for your decision needs to be where you live and work. Coverage varies by location for all the carriers, so the best place to start is to find out if people in your area like the performance of their network. The coolest phone or the lowest prices in the world don't mean jack if it never works where you need it to work.

A guy I work with just got this deal through Sprint. We also get a 20% discount through our employer, so my wife and I will be switching to Sprint for this deal when our Verizon contract expires in August.

For him to get a similar deal with Verizon would have cost around $180.

Agree with that, if you are in the TC, seriously, EVO 4g. DSM wont get it for a long time though.

+1. If you are in the cities, the 4G data network will go live this year. The EVO 4G is rumored to be coming out in early June and will be the first 4G phone to hit the US. The 4G data service will give you downloads that average 6 megabits and peak at 12, 10x faster than current 3G. And the phone can serve as its own wifi hotspot to share that connection with 8 other wifi enabled devices. It will do the same with 3G in areas where 4G is not available.

The hardware on this thing is a monster too, a cut above the recent Incredible on Verizon and the Google Nexus on TMO and ATT. 1GHz processor, an 8MP camera that shoots 720p video, an HDMI output, and on and on. I am a big fan of HTC phones and the Google Android OS, so needless to say, I am stoked about this device.

Sprint - HTC EVO? 4G
