Do we have anyone in the WNBA right now?

Was stuck watching the LA/San Antonio game (I love our twister sisters, but hate the WNBA) while at the gym and was trying to think if we had anyone actively on a team. I know we've had a handful get signed, but released before the season, and even a few get drafted, but wasn't sure of their status on a team.

Don't believe so. Nikki and Pop both got waived by San Antonio before the start of this season. As far as I know, those were the only two former Cyclones with a chance at making a roster.

I find the WNBA very difficult to watch, unless there is a Cyclone playing (and even then, the games can be rough). They're trying so hard to be the NBA in style and it just looks sloppy and amateurish . I think the last time I saw a game on tv, Aus was playing for Seattle.

Nope. Pop probably has the best chance to stick with a team at some point, but she's been battling injuries so it won't be this year.

Who is currently (as of last season) playing overseas? Does anyone know what Tracy Gahan decided to do after she retired?

Hallie is playing in Austria I believe. Lauren Mansfield is playing in Australia (which technically not abroad for her since she is from Australia).

WNBA is a tough nut to crack. 144 total roster spots in the entire league, 36 draft picks every year (25%). First-round picks aren't even guaranteed to make a team.

My Aunt works for the WNBA and says the biggest challenge for our ISU players is that they just aren't athletic enough to cut it in the league. Need to be tall and athletic and most of our ISU players that get drafted are just average athletes that aren't standout "all around players." They only allow 12 players on a roster and there are only 12 teams so there are only 144 active players in the league. Even if you get drafted in the 1st round (just 12 picks) you aren't guaranteed a spot on a roster because there just isn't as much turnover as you see with the NBA. Not many niche players have long careers in the WNBA which is what a lot of our players are in that league.

Brittany Wilkins probably had the most "successful" tenure in the WNBA which isn't saying much since she bounced between overseas and playing on some injury riddled teams. Players like Pop are more suited for the overseas game, Lacey played in Australia some after her WNBA stint, not sure if Megan Taylor or Stacy Freese tried overseas at all or not but Freese had a short stint in the WNBA and even with her long range shooting it wasn't enough to stick because the WNBA is more physical and fast paced than the college game and that is just not what ISU women's basketball has been over the years
