really? Seems like the same Mac I knew.

Funny story: 7 years after I graduated I was walking through the Memphis Airport on my way to catch a flight to OKC and I hear "Schroeds", I keep walking thinking to myself what the heck only people from football call me that and I don't know anyone down here, so I keep walking and I hear it again "Schroeds". So this time I acknowledge it and turn towards where I heard it and there is Mac sitting in a shoe shine chair getting his shoes shined. I stopped and talked to him a bit, but was absolutely floored that 7 years after I was done playing for him (and I was no Sage, Enis Haywood, or other big star on the team) he could still pick me out in a busy airport. Blows my mind.

I am in pretty much the same boat. My uncle knew Dan some how from college, and he was a really class act every time I met with him as a kid. He really did bring back a program that was completely dead, just pathetic. He was even nice enough to get me Troy and Darren's autographs. I went from wanting to be the next BJ Armstrong, to the next Jamaal Tinsley because of coach Mac. Thank your respective religious deities.

That was pretty much the perfect storm for the football series, Dan had recruited some pretty good football players and Hayden didn't leave much behind for the next coach.

Jamie Pollard gets all the credit for the SEZ as he is very deserving, however, I don't for one second believe had Mac not had the success that he had, we would be anywhere near where we are at facility or fan support wise. His teams made it cool to like iowa state and you could see the change slowly but surely throughout middleschools and high schools throughout the state to a point where now, I see it pretty near 50/50 whereas it was about 80/20 or worse.

I went to Gilbert and it was the early 80's when I was in junior high and I'd say I was 1 of maybe 5 or 6 out of 200 students (that's all Gilbert had 7th-12th grade at that time) that routed for ISU...and Gilbert is 5 miles away. So I totally agree that Mac beating Iowa in 1998 started the turn.
