I'm just going to take the route of watching this team play to see how they improve by March. I'm not expecting them to get a tremendous amount of wins...if they do, great. But the Big12 is unmerciful...ask Oklahoma from last year. There may be times where we are capable of beating the Kansas' of the world. And then turn around the next night and get beat by someone we should beat. It will be a roller coaster of a ride.

Very much depends against who ISU gets the wins, but in the 10-team history (2012-present) of the Big 12 ALL 20-win teams has made NCAA tournament. Historically, a few teams have had 18 and 19-win season and still qualified too.

Even if ISU goes 6-1 in the remainder of non-conference play that means it would need to find at least 8-9 conference wins to be on the bubble before the conference tournament begins.

Making the NCAA tournament will not be easy, but ISU is not that far from the middle of the pack teams in the B12. Fortunately, there is no such thing as a "bad" loss in the B12 either- every win is significant unlike pretty much every other conference.

Also, do not sleep on ISU's home court advantage that could "will" this team to enough wins. Non-conference games against Iowa and Tennessee are both home games too.

I will not be utterly shocked if ISU finds some way to make another NCAA tournament (there is a plausible pathway), but I will be tremendously impressed.

Under Prohm, Murray State started 2014-15 season with a 2-4 record and then went on to win 25 straight games. Obviously, winning in the Ohio Valley Conference isn't the Big 12. The point is more that I doubt anyone thought a 2-4 start would end up with such a winning streak. Regardless of the conference, it's an indication of good coaching, as is this year's teams' turnaround from the 0-2 start. Anyway, that's the fun part of this season: watching players/team improve and maybe a surprise with an NCAA berth.

As Chitowncy said, RPI is of minimal use at this point, but for anyone interested in tracking it throughout the season, a couple of basics that lend more depth.
1. Don’t get hung up on actual ranking until at least mid-January.
2. More importantly, use the CBS RPI comparison to gauge W/L vs. RPI numbers .. here’s a side-by-side of ISU and ATM (currently RPI #1). Note results vs. 1-150, 51-100, etc., for each team.
3. Also, pay some attention to SOS and home-away-neutral (especially the latter).

Might get in? In this league? If we go 9-9 I doubt I'm even nervous on selection Sunday. Assuming we perform like we should through the rest of non-con...

9-9 without a marquee win is still sweat time if you're not a blueblood. Go 9-9 but beat Kansas or on the road at WVU or something and then we're pretty.

However, based on the talent and a little improvement I see each game, there is a chance to win out in the non con. Have to absolutely beat Iowa now. Earlier I thought we'd lose but they'd have a high rpi.

Yes, the Iowa game is now worrying me in that it might be a loss that hurts our RPI. I didn't think they would lose as much early in the year like they have. I thought they might have a tourney team coming into the year. They haven't looked good.

If they keep losing, Fran should just redshirt his son. They have a lot of experience and some good talent coming back next year.

I think if we're shooting well, limiting turnovers and the crowd is rocking we can beat them.

Yeah, but didn't that team get left out of the tournament after losing in the conference finals? Not the most reassuring of examples... LOL!

No, it will be best when Fran can fire up his 13 player rotation. Release the beast!

Wish people would just leave their politics in the cave. To me and many others I'm sure it is like fingernails on a chalkboard ... regardless of one's views ... and not the reason folks come to this site (other than the cave). OP got it going and others respond ... same as it always was. Is there some way mods can delete posts with politics ... or immediately move them to the cave as a disincentive?

I have hidden the cave because I didn't want to see any of it. Yet, people are allowed to drop little quips outside of the cave often. Usually the same people. It seems these are allowed coming from a certain "direction."

9-9 in the Big 12 this year and you have won some solid games.

Experience doesn't equal talent. Until Iowa can get some quality guards what you see is what you get.

My apologies. The offending comment (I believe it to be the offending comment) has been modified. I appreciate and respect the divide between the political forum and the Cyclone forum, and I would like this thread to just be about ISU basketball's RPI.

Hot take alert... This is purely for discussion purposes but lets say Iowa misses the tourney this yer (they probably will) I could see Cook transferring out if they can't shore up their issues at G/PG.

When Gessell and Woodbury were freshman, they were pretty solid. Then they didn't improve at all in 4 years. Who knows if that will be the case with the current group of Iowa Freshmen and Sophomores.

That team had some balance. Iowa's current roster is full of guys with no identity and you have a SG playing PG.
